You can afford the pay hotel bills for months. You were with the kids so it might not be a single room occupancy. That is luxurious. Whom are you encouraging? You are rich so there is no didactic reasoning in your story.
Hotels? Then you had money. Ask where people sleep with their kids. You had money to pay for hotel?

A month of the hotel bills could have rented you a single room self contained for at least a year.
