We all know of many "average-class" men or women who rose to great heights. As I write this one individual I know comes to mind. A West African friend from a worse than average background (he was raised by a single mother and never really knew his real father). His mother was I think a bread vendor who made massive sacrifices and put him through primary school, then secondary school. His grandmother helped as well. Each day he helped his mother bake bread at dawn before he set out to walk to school (his classmates always teased him for always smelling of freshly baked bread). A kind teacher recognised his aptitude and encouraged him in his studies. He studied after classes in the evening using a kerosene lamp. He eventually got state funding to attend a local university. This is where he met according to his own words, the love of his life. She came from a wealthy background with relatives holding influential positions in government, the civil service and in major church denominations.
She took him home in a very upmarket part of town. The encounter with her family went disastrously wrong. The one-hour visit ended abruptly when the father of the lady arrived and after an interview that lasted less than 5 minutes ordered him out of the house.
I met him in at our local church in a European city while studying there. My friend had invited me to his plush home where I met his lovely foreign wife and their 3 well-behaved children. He was now second in command of the national branch of the Multinational company he worked for. His extremely unpleasant encounter with the bigots back in Nigeria two and a half decades earlier on was a very distant memory and he laughed and joked over his experience when he recalled how he had borrowed a friend’s pair of rather tight trousers and polished his shoes to mirror-shininess just to make himself presentable to her people. Today he has risen even higher and is now relocated to the US where he earns a 7-figure salary +bonuses.
That arrogant father of that girl was only interested in finding out his family background.
HE EXCELLED EVENTUALLY BECAUSE HE WAS VERY HARD-WORKING, AMBITIOUS, VERY FOCUSED, DISCIPLINED AND TENACIOUS. He reached the top of his game not through family contacts but through sheer perseverance and overcoming great adversity from his early childhood.

There are many women and men as well who decided to follow the dictates of their domineering parents who end up letting go of a sterling character who during the dating period did not look glamorous or very promising. However, if parents give priority to a person’s CHARACTER AND VALUES, they will unfailingly help their children make the right choices. Sadly, a lot of misguided, greedy parents with no solid values themselves will encourage their children to marry someone solely because they are rich, have powerful social connections or have a desirable Western passport or are good looking.
There is nothing wrong with these, but they can never form a solid foundation for marriage. DOING SO WOULD BE BUILDING ON SAND.
The choice of a life partner based on such shallow values as listed above invariably lead to a life of misery due to incompatibility, money issues, lack of ambition, dishonesty, unfaithfulness disrespect etc etc.
TO THIS DATE THE BIGEST CAUSE OF MARIAGE BREAK UPS WORLDWIDE REMAIN ISSUES LINKED TO MONEY.
There is something very special about a couple starting marriage with the bare necessities of life, growing and maturing together while building their net worth through diligence, discipline, frugality, saving and investing wisely and having healthy ambition.
A MARRIAGE MADE IN HEAVEN IS NOT A MARRIAGE THAT DOESN’T FACE CHALLENGES OR SETBACKS BUT RATHER ONE IN WHICH THE KING OF HEAVEN IS INVITED BY A COUPLE TO ASSIST AND SUPPORT THEM IN THE BUMPY MARATHON JOURNEY THAT MARRIAGE IS.

Can't he see that at age 30, you are not growing young? They do not care about how you feel. Your father want to destroy your life before he dies. I personally see this as nonsense on the part of your family. But you still need your father's approval and blessing for the good of your marriage. If you are christians, then I will suggest to you to involve a respectable pastor or a respected elder of your extended family to intervene and plead with your father on your behalf. I believe he will listen and be sensible enough to allow you get married. If all these measures fail, then your last resort is your court idea. God is your main father. Your earthly father is only your caretaker. Your life is not in his hands. You can build your own life from the scratch with your husband. God who brought you to this world will see you through. May God grant you victory in this challenge.

Secondly present this to respectable family members, men and women of God( pastor, rev e.t.c) and let them intervene on your behave. If all solutions fails, then dear, ask God to turn your proud father into nebuchadenezzar in the forest. But before you resort to option 3, make sure you and the guy genuinely understand each other. May God help and open your marital heavens.

When your family makes things harder for you and you can't provide the finances that you currently provide, what will he do?

When there is trust amongst the 2 of you and you know he will not disappoint you then you may decide to go it alone.

Let your family know and invite them.

But that means you have sold yourself to the man.

There are a lot of miserable men and women today because they followed the dictates of their parents or other relatives rather than their own better judgement. Parents can object to a person their son or daughter is hoping to marry because of tribe, race, because they they have someone else in mind as a spouse for their child, because they want their offspring to marry into a wealthy or respectable family or family with great social standing. There is nothing wrong with these considerations, but these must never be the foundation on which a marriage is built.
IT IS VITAL TO REMEMBER THAT A SON OR DAUGHTER WILL BE MARRYING AN INDIVIDUAL with whom they will share life’s ups and downs together (their joys and sorrows, or as the old marriage vows say in "sickness or health" and "in riches or poverty").This means that the character of the person we hope to marry should be the number one consideration at all times.
WHO YOU MARRY CAN MAKE OR BREAK YOU SO GIVE CAREFUL THOUGHT TO YOUR CHOICE. CHOOSE WISELY.
