Veteran Ghanaian filmmaker and cultural figure Socrate Safo has made a public appeal to dancehall star Shatta Wale concerning his habit of throwing cash in public spaces.

In a detailed Facebook post, Safo highlighted the deep emotional connection between Shatta Wale and his fanbase, known for their loyalty and visible support at concerts and public appearances.

He noted that the artiste often expresses gratitude through gestures that go beyond performance, including sharing a portion of show earnings with supporters.

However, Safo said that the uncoordinated distribution of money, especially throwing cash from moving vehicles into crowded streets, has resulted in disorderly scenes and safety risks.

“The lucky ones secure a generous share; the unfortunate ones leave with bruises, torn clothing, or worse. These chaotic scrambles often unfold in the middle of active roads, amid moving vehicles of all sizes. Apart from the artiste’s convoy, unsuspecting motorists have little or no warning of the sudden surge of humanity onto the streets.

“The situation is uncoordinated, unstaged, and dangerously unpredictable. In such circumstances, anything at all can happen,” he said.

Rather than spontaneous cash drops, Safo proposed structured, long-term initiatives that could deliver more substantial impact, such as an annual apprenticeship programme funded by the artiste.

“What if that same generosity were channelled into structured, life-changing initiatives? Imagine an annual apprenticeship programme sponsored by the artiste, funding, for instance, two hundred dedicated fans each year to learn a trade of their choice. From carpentry to tailoring, coding to sound engineering, such opportunities could create sustainable livelihoods.

“In a country where many young people are searching for stable employment, this could be transformative. It would be safer, more strategic, and infinitely more beneficial to society. The goodwill would remain, perhaps even deepen, but without the risk and chaos that currently accompany public cash distributions,” he suggested.

The filmmaker framed his appeal not as criticism but as counsel “born out of admiration”, urging that generosity guided by foresight can become a lasting legacy, contrasting that with money that “scatters in the wind.”
