Renowned media personality and Deputy CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Abeiku Santana, has observed a significant shift in how Easter is celebrated in Ghana.

He noted that the period has evolved into one of the country’s most vibrant tourism seasons.

Speaking in an interview on Joy Prime on April 9, 2026, Abeiku Santana explained that Easter is no longer just a time for rest and reflection, but has grown into a period filled with diverse activities that attract people from across the country and beyond.

According to him, in the past, holidays were largely quiet, with little to no organized events.

However, the narrative has changed as Easter now features a wide range of activities that encourage movement and participation.

“Easter has become one of the hottest tourism seasons in Ghana. It’s no longer a holiday, and when I say holiday, we used to have holidays where we just relaxed, and there were no activities.

“Now, Easter has become a tourism season in the sense that there are several activities that draw people to move from their various places to go and experience,” he said.

He further highlighted that the season has expanded beyond its traditional religious significance to include various forms of entertainment and cultural expression.

“Easter is now faith-based art, music, food, entertainment, culture, and adventure,” he stated.

Abeiku Santana noted that Easter celebrations used to be more centered on church conventions and family gatherings, with many people leaving the cities to participate in faith-based activities.

“I remember when we were young, you won’t find people in the city. Everyone is going to the convention, and that was the moment that we all came together as people. It was very pronounced and more of church faith-based activities, but that wasn’t defined as tourism,” he recalled.

He added that with the growing appreciation of tourism in Ghana, Easter has now been redefined, with numerous events springing up across the country, further boosting local travel and economic activity.

“Now, because of the concept of tourism, we have appreciated, and now there are events coming in here and there,” he added.
