Omah Lay is a popular Nigerian Afrobeats artiste
Nigerian singer-songwriter Omah Lay has sparked a fierce debate across the Afrobeats community after declaring himself the greatest artiste the genre has produced this decade.
The 'Bad Influence' and 'Soso' hitmaker made the claim during an interview with UK-based radio station Capital XTRA, where he spoke with striking confidence about his place in the Afrobeats landscape.
"I am the greatest Afrobeats artiste of the decade. I am the greatest," he said.
But Omah Lay framed his claim around artistry rather than commercial metrics. Acknowledging that he may not lead in streaming numbers, fame, or public profile, he insisted those benchmarks miss the point entirely.
"You can say that in terms of numbers, personality and the level of fame and stardom, maybe you will not consider me. But when it comes to making art, I'm the greatest. When it comes to the art itself, I am the greatest," he stated.
Nigerian artistes no longer put effort into making music – Omah Lay claims
The declaration did not stop there. Omah Lay also reiterated a previous claim that he is currently working on what will be the defining Afrobeats album of his generation, a project he believes will reshape the direction of the genre.
"It's going to be the greatest Afrobeats album of this decade, of my generation. And it is going to shape everything that's going to happen going forward with Afrobeats," he said.
The comments have since triggered strong reactions online, with fans and industry observers divided over whether Omah Lay's self-assessment is justified confidence or overreach.
