Celestine Donkor is an award-winning gospel artiste
Gospel musician Celestine Donkor has shared her views on what truly makes a marriage last, noting that long courtships or prayers and fasting are not a guarantee of a successful union.
In a video posted on Facebook alongside her husband, Kofi Donkor, on Sunday, May 3, 2026, the award-winning singer argued that the length of a relationship before marriage means very little if both partners have not made a firm, unwavering commitment to each other.
"It is not about how long you date or the fasting and prayers that make your marriage a lasting one. People have dated for five, ten, or fifteen years. And the day they got married, they still saw something strange in their partner," she said.
“And two weeks later they started planning a divorce,” her husband chipped in.
The Donkors also took a swipe at couples who stretch their courtship indefinitely in the name of getting to know each other better.
“I saw a couple who have been dating for eight years, and when you ask them why they are not married, they will say they are still studying each other. Are you an economics or psychology course?” she quipped.
The young generation lacks consistency – Celestine Donkor
She compared marital commitment to a Ghanaian's devotion to waakye, arguing that just as no doctor's warning can easily make a die-hard fan quit eating the food, a spouse who is truly committed to their marriage will not be shaken by challenges.
“Even if you have a health issue and the doctor says ‘don't eat waakye again,’ it will be difficult for you to stop because you are wired to always eat waakye.
“The same way, if you decide you will remain with your spouse and your spouse also makes the decision that 'you and I, we are doing this for life,’ It will last,“ she concluded.
According to the award-winning gospel artiste, mutual resolve is the true foundation of a lasting marriage.
