'I should have been 2019 VGMA Artiste of the Year' – Kuami Eugene

A fresh wave of conversation has resurfaced, with singer Kuami Eugene insisting that he believes he should have been declared the winner of the 2019 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.

Speaking in an interview on JoyPrime, the “Monica” hitmaker argued that his performance in the year under review was strong enough to earn him the top honour.

He explained that he released several hit songs and capped the night with a major win, taking home Album of the Year for his “Rockstar” project, which in his view strengthened his case for Artiste of the Year.

“People don’t care; they will say last year this guy worked harder than you. They won’t recall the fact that it was my year and this thing happened. I believe I should have won in 2019. I dropped all the bangers, and I took Album of the Year with the Rockstar album,” he argued.

The 2019 edition of the awards, however, ended in controversy after the announcement of the Artiste of the Year category was halted and eventually cancelled.

This followed a confrontation between Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy on stage, which disrupted the event and led to both artistes being suspended from the award scheme for a year.

Since then, questions have lingered about who won the top award that night. Stonebwoy has repeatedly called on Charterhouse, organisers of the Ghana Music Awards, to officially announce the winner of the 2019 Artiste of the Year category.

The Dancehall artiste strongly maintains that he was the rightful winner and has expressed confidence that making the announcement would confirm his claim.

“I have been very hardworking throughout the years. Ever since I won the Ghana Music Artiste of the Year in 2015, I won it again in 2019 but we all saw what happened.

“So I just want to plead with Charterhouse, as honourable as they are to make that they announce the winner, which I am confident that it was Stonebwoy for 2019, and then this in 2024,” the ‘Sobolo’ hitmaker said.
