Ghanaian musician and filmmaker Wanlov The Kubolor has criticised the proposed anti LGBTQ+ bill, alleging that some individuals supporting the legislation are motivated by profit rather than morality.
Speaking in an interview on MX24 on May 7, 2026, the artiste claimed that certain politicians and religious groups backing the bill could benefit financially if more people are imprisoned under the law.
“For the first time in our history, this bill they’re trying to pass and when I say ‘they’, I mean the homophobic sector of the parliament as well as the people that sponsor them or behind them,” he said.
According to Wanlov, the issue goes beyond religion and morality, arguing that there are economic interests tied to the enforcement of such laws.
“They’re fine with pushing this agenda because there’s a lot of money involved at the end of the day. If people are being randomly pointed at and being labelled as queer and being jailed for that, that’s a section of the population that can be found in prisons for cheap labour,” he stated.

He further alleged that some churches and politicians could potentially benefit from prison-related investments.
“These churches and MPs can have shares in these prison like stock and be making money from it,” he shared.
He continued, “We will see on the front that it’s a moral thing, there are people raping children and doing bad things in society. There are so many women moving out of the lines of religious moralities that they’re trying to use to persecute the LGBTQ people and just focusing on the sex aspects of their lives.”
Wanlov also questioned the moral basis often used in arguments against LGBTQ+ individuals, insisting that no one is perfect.
“They’re going to make more profit and that’s the main thing pushing them; the sponsoring and the profits, rather than even the religious aspect, because you find out that all these people that are preaching morality, we always end up finding some stories about their lives,” he noted.
He added, “Nobody is perfect, so why would someone want to jail another person because of something they disagree with, which is not infringing on their personal rights.”
