Angel Maxine urges LGBTQ+ community not to panic over anti-LGBTQ bill
Ghanaian transgender musician Angel Maxine has called for calm among members of the LGBTQ+ community in Ghana, expressing confidence that President John Dramani Mahama will not assent to the bill passed by Parliament.
In a video shared on social media on May 29, 2026, Angel Maxine urged the community not to panic, insisting that nobody can harm them and describing the parliamentary approval of the bill as political posturing.
“The Ghanaian anti-LGBTQ+ bill has been passed today in Parliament. As we continue to fight it, please do not panic. Do not be afraid. Nobody can do anything to you. It’s the politicians sitting in Parliament who are fooling themselves. They’re challenging themselves. That is why they have passed that bill,” Maxine said.

He further claimed that Ghana is preparing to host a Continental Anti-Right Conference, where people from Uganda and other African countries that have passed similar legislation will gather in Ghana to discuss the issue.
According to him, this development is part of the reason the bill was passed — to create the impression that authorities are taking action.
Angel Maxine also expressed confidence that President Mahama would not sign the bill into law.
“This is just the bill that they have passed. The President has not signed it, and the President will not sign it. The President is not foolish. He will not sign this foolish bill. So don’t be afraid,” he added.
On May 29, 2026, Ghana’s Parliament approved a new bill criminalising homosexuality and the promotion of LGBTQ+ activities.
Under the proposed law, identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer could attract a prison sentence of up to three years.
The bill also introduces a “duty to report” requirement, compelling individuals to report prohibited acts to the police.
The bill will now be forwarded to the President’s office for assent.
