How Akwaboah Snr allegedly ‘punished’ Jewel Ackah over band money - Aka Blay recounts

Legendary Ghanaian musician, Aka Blay, has recounted a memorable incident from his days in a music band with the late Jewel Kofi Ackah and Akwaboah Senior.

Speaking in an interview with broadcaster Kafui Dey, shared on YouTube and monitored by GhanaWeb on June 8, 2026, Aka Blay narrated how Jewel Ackah allegedly spent money earned by the band after a performance.

Recounting the incident, Aka Blay said they had once performed for the American Embassy in Ghana and, after the event, Jewel Ackah allegedly took the payment without sharing it with the rest of the band members.

He further claimed that following the incident, Akwaboah Senior, who was the band leader at the time, decided to teach Jewel Ackah a lesson during a subsequent performance.

According to Akablay, Akwaboah Senior instructed him to play in a different key while Jewel Ackah was performing, which made it difficult for the late singer to perform comfortably on stage.

Aka Blay noted that moments like these remain some of his fondest memories from his days performing with his bandmates, adding that Jewel Ackah eventually returned the money.

“One of my best moments playing with Jewel Ackah was when we performed at the American Embassy in 1990. Jewel had taken the band’s money. We played on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and after that, Jewel disappeared and didn’t return. The following Saturday, we were performing at the American Embassy’s end-of-year party, and he showed up.

"He had a particular song he usually performed, and Akwaboah instructed me to change the key to a higher pitch. Because of that, he struggled to sing. He turned to ask me what key I was playing, and Akwaboah told him to continue singing because he had taken the band’s money. He got angry and left. The following Tuesday, he returned with the money,” he said.
