At a point, rapper Joey B stepped back from the music scene and disappeared for a while.

Speaking about his haitus, he explained that it was largely due to health challenges.

In an interview on 3Music TV on June 10, 2026, the rapper disclosed that he had been dealing with asthma without initially knowing what was wrong.

According to him, he often struggled with breathing and fatigue during performances, but mistook the symptoms for something else at the time.

“I got sick. Asthma. Yeah. It was bad because I think I didn’t know I had asthma… I didn’t know it. Like I used to go out performing, and it’s like I would feel tired, like I can’t breathe,” he noted.

Joey B explained that it was around 2019 when a doctor first raised concerns about asthma, which helped him begin to understand what he was experiencing.

He added that his father had also once suffered from asthma, which made the conversation even more relatable and concerning for him at the time.

From that point, the “Tonga” hitmaker said he became more intentional about taking care of his health.

He also identified his working environment as a major trigger for his condition, especially the long hours he spent in the studio.

According to Joey, the materials used for soundproofing, particularly foam, worsened his symptoms the more time he spent in the studio.

“What was triggering it was… every time, I no dey sleep house, I sleep in the studio. So the more I slept there, the worse it got,” Joey B noted.

Despite the health scare and his temporary absence from the scene, Joey B emphatically stated that he never considered quitting music.

When asked whether there was a moment he felt like giving up, he responded firmly that it was never an option, only a need to regain his strength.

“Oh, hell no. I just needed my strength back,” he insisted.

He also addressed the common concern about artistes losing relevance when they take breaks from music, acknowledging the risk but expressing confidence in his return.

For him, his faith played a key role in how he viewed his career and future in music.

“It’s like, anyone that knows me knows I’m very spiritual, like very. God has always been my anchor for me. Before I even got here, I always knew, no, something must be governing, like something, something must be happening. I didn’t understand it. So the older I got, I knew that something is definitely looking at me. Something is definitely looking up or towards me,” he added.
