Gold Board to support creative industry growth – Sammy Gyamfi

Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, has pledged the institution's support for Shatta Wale's annual music festival, Shatta Fest, as part of efforts to promote Ghana's creative industry.

Speaking when Shatta Wale and Medikal paid a courtesy call on the Gold Board headquarters on July 9, 2026, Sammy Gyamfi praised the two musicians for their immense contribution to the country's entertainment industry and assured them of the government's willingness to collaborate with artistes.

According to him, the government is committed to creating an enabling environment for creatives to thrive and will continue to support initiatives that project Ghana positively.

"We were considering how we, as a government, can create the enabling environment for you to thrive and support your artistry. I want to commend you for that. The Ghana Gold Board, which I'm privileged and humbled to lead, will do our best to collaborate with you and support you," he said.

Sammy Gyamfi announced that Gold Board would officially partner with Shatta Wale for the next edition of Shatta Fest, expressing confidence that the event would once again attract a massive audience.

"With regards to Shatta Fest, count us in. We will be a part of it. We know it's going to be big because anything involving you and your brother, Medikal, turns out to be big. The last one we saw last year was something else. I think that will pass as the biggest gathering ever in the history of this country. I don't think any football match or event has come close to that. It's a testament to the love people have for you," he stated.

He noted that GoldBod's support would not be limited to Shatta Wale alone but would extend to other players in the entertainment industry as part of efforts to advance the national agenda.

"We are ready to collaborate with you and support not just you but your other colleagues in the industry. It's all about Ghana, and we're advancing the Ghana agenda," he shared.

Touching on the mandate of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi explained that the government, under President John Dramani Mahama, is implementing reforms to ensure Ghana derives greater value from its gold resources.

According to him, for decades, Ghana exported gold in its raw state while missing out on the economic benefits of local refining and value addition.

"Since Ghana became Ghana, we've been blessed with gold as a mineral resource. For more than a century, we were not maximising or getting the benefits we ought to derive from it because we mined the gold, destroyed the environment in the process, and sold it in its raw form," he said.

He disclosed that the government intends to refine more of Ghana's gold locally and expand the production of jewellery, gold coins, gold tablets, and other value-added products.

"It's tragic that we have children who have never seen a gold tablet before. President Mahama is determined to change that narrative. He has tasked us to ensure that we produce gold responsibly, refine it locally, and reform the trading sector so that every gold produced in Ghana is bought by Ghana," he added.
