Depends on what kind of friends we are talking about. Some "friends" are NOT good for our spiritual and emotional wellbeing. These fake friends are best removed from our lives. Most people as they get older become more circumspect and more cautious of friendships. Some friendships are worth their weight in Gold and must be preserved, nurtured and appreciated and others very harmful if we continue to hold on to them.
If we are maturing as persons, then inevitably our goals and priorities in life will evolve over time. Over the years many of us will discover that we no longer share values and priorities with some of the fiends or colleagues of our youth. Life has a way of changing all of u and transforming us. The raw experiences of life, including setbacks and wins, vocational development, marriage, raising kids etc all play important roles in changing us (hopefully for the better). We should therefore not be surprised or even dismayed if after many years we find that we seem to have little in common with for example SOME childhood friends or friends we had during our early adulthood. We may discover that we no longer want to hang out that much with them in the same bars, drinking, cracking the same silly jokes and eyeing the girls. This is because over the years we have reoriented ourselves and reprioritized ourselves and we now feel far more at ease in the presence of like-minded individuals with whom we meet or interact with and talk about issues that matter to us or are relevant to our current human experiences. THIS IS WHY ALUMNI MEETINGS SOMETIMES TURN OUT TO BE VERY DISAPPOINTING AFFAIRS FOR SOME PEOPLE. THIS HAPPENS BECAUSE THESE MEETINGS OFTEN REVEAL WIDE DIVERGENCES IN GOALS, PRIORITIES AND STYLE THAT HAVE QUIETLY GROWN OVER MANY YEARS IN GROUPS THAT ONCE CONSIDERED THEMSELVES TO HAVE REASONABLY COMMON INTERESTS AND AGENDAS. However, we must never despair if this happens because change is inevitable during life’s often difficult journey. We should embrace healthy change. WE SHOULD ALWAYS STICK WITH OUR CORE CONVICTIONS WHILE MAKING COMPROMISES WHEREVER THIS IS WISE OR FEASIBLE. LIFES IS TOO SHORT TO ALLOW OURSELVES TO BECOME DISTRACTED OR TO BE CAUGHT UP IN EVERY PROJECT, EVERY CAUSE, HOWEVER WORTHY THESE MAY APPEAR.
