The fact is that what keep society intact is the fear that you will be punished if you go against the norms and taboos of society.
Without that fear and institutions that are set up by society to keep the individual in line that society does not disintegrate.
We witness how the Ghanaian society disintegrated after the 1966 coup and other unconstitutional disruptions.
The same has been the case in the former socialist states of Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
In all those cases it is not only fear of the law that brought about fracture of society, but military intervention from the west.
So, to quote the words of Solzhenitsyn the former soviet dissident "Democracy is a ruse to led us astray".
