'Remove the hard labour, let him serve the 20-years' – Afia Schwarz on Wontumi's sentence

Controversial media personality Afia Schwarzenegger has sparked reactions on social media after jokingly pleading for mercy for Chairman Wontumi following his conviction in the Samreboi illegal mining case.

In a video circulating online, Afia claimed her pastor had advised her to forgive as a Christian, prompting her to make an appeal to president John Dramani Mahama and the judiciary.

"This morning my pastor called me. He said as a Christian, I should practise forgiveness. So I am begging President Mahama and the Ghanaian judiciary, have a bit of mercy on Wontumi. The 20 years with hard labour, remove the hard labour and let him just serve the 20 years," she said amid laughter.

She then jokingly asked viewers, "What were you expecting me to say?"

Afia's remarks come a day after an Accra High Court sentenced the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, to an effective 20 years' imprisonment after finding him guilty on all six counts in the illegal mining case involving Akonta Mining.

The court also fined him GH¢120,000, while Akonta Mining was fined GH¢180,000.

Chairman Wontumi and Afia have been in a public feud for years, trading insults and accusations across television, radio, and social media.

The feud even escalated into a lawsuit on 2022 which ended in a 10-day prison sentence but was later substituted for a GH¢60,000 fine and a 36-month good behavior bond.
