Jailing Wontumi proves ORAL is still active - KSM

Veteran Ghanaian comedian and social commentator, Kwaku Sintim-Misa (KSM), has established that the conviction and imprisonment of NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, proves the government's Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative is still alive and pursuing accountability.

Speaking on the development, KSM said Wontumi's conviction sends a strong signal that the anti-corruption campaign has not lost momentum.

"The arrest of Wontumi has signalled that the fight of ORAL has not died. And people are going to follow," he said.

According to him, although justice may appear slow, the legal process is still taking its course.

"The wheels of justice are still grinding, but they are grinding slowly," he stated.

KSM also criticised the New Patriotic Party's response to the case, arguing that the party should have acknowledged past mistakes instead of portraying the matter as politically motivated.

"It would have done no wrong for the NPP to say, 'We messed up, and we will rebuild and reset Ghana. So, we will support all actions in furtherance of collecting the loot.'" he said.

He further argued that the party's posture had reinforced public perceptions that it was shielding individuals accused of wrongdoing.

He referenced comments by some party officials urging members not to honour invitations from state investigative agencies

"Sadly, they confirmed people's pain and suspicion that they stand with the looters," KSM said.

He also dismissed claims that Wontumi was a political prisoner, insisting that such arguments disregard the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining.

"When the forests were being destroyed? If you had respect for Ghanaians, you won't hold this press conference and say all of this is political.

" When you say that, it is just an insult to ordinary Ghanaians," he added.

Wontumi was recently sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment after being convicted on illegal mining-related offences.
