Even a butcher knows that they must pause from time to time to sharpen the blades of their knives so that they can continue to cut or carve their meat and bone with ease. A wood cutter also needs to stop and sharpen their axe regularly otherwise their job will become harder to do with time. A teacher or lecturer who does not study to keep up to becomes less useful to their students. A doctor or engineer who does not constantly update his or her knowledge base will soon become less effective or even dangerous with time.

We are not picking on our great army which is there to protect Ghana from EXTERNAL ENEMIES but rather emphasizing the importance of keeping abreast of critical changes in the way their tasks will be carried out in the future. There is a reason Iran has been able to hold its own to the present day despite facing “overwhelming “and relentless military attacks. The head of any nation’s army must keep well informed of new developments in the defence industry or modern warfare: Until 4 years ago (before the Ukrainian war), warfare emphasised the importance of tanks, armoured personnel carriers, field artillery and the use of large troop formations when confronting a well-armed enemy. Today a $500-dollar FPV Drone can be used to destroy a 5-million-dollar tank with great ease. Also, the ongoing Iran war showed that surface ships of all kinds including aircraft carriers which cost several billion dollars to build are incredibly vulnerable and can even be sent to the bottom of the ocean by missiles costing a few hundreds of millions of dollars. Welcome to 21st century warfare. So, for example if you are in overall charge of the defence budget, you’ll not be wasting scarce resources on very expensive armoured personal carriers that can now easily be neutralised by off-the-shelf drones costing less than $500 and instead will be focusing on dramatically improving your armed forces drone technology and warfare capabilities. Drone warfare and surveillance (the latest being fibre optic FPV Drones) now make it almost impossible to assemble any troop concentrations of more than just a handful of personnel anywhere near the frontlines as they would easily be taken out. I’m not a military person but I have read enough in open sources to recognise these rapidly evolving and critical changes in modern warfare.

Anybody who has achieved greatness in any area in life will tell you that they had to endure these necessary long periods of obscurity, quietness and seeming unproductivity even though they were toiling very hard. Often this is forced on them by life’s circumstances that are beyond their control such as the loss of a job, devastating family(relationship) problems or ill-health. During these tough periods these people become invisible, unrecognised, drop below the radar but these periods or obscurity, being hidden out of sight are critical for their personal and character development. These are golden periods during which individuals often change course, reset their priorities and discover new strengths and abilities which they never knew they had. The adversity and hardship they endure is what forges these strengths.
EXCELLENCE DOES NOT COME CHEAP BUT RATHER IT IS THE OUTWARD MANIFESTAION OF MANY YEARS OF HARD WORK, PERSEVEREANCE, TENACITY IN THE FACE OF GREAT ADVERSITY, OVERCOMING SETBACKS. EXCELLENT INDIVIDUALS ARE FORGED IN THE FURNACE OF AFFLICTION. [NELSON MANDELA]. You don’t need to reach the popularity of Nelson Mandela to be a person of excellence or a great person. The greater your calling in life, the harder, longer and more painful your apprenticeship will be. Great Humility and Integrity are some of the character traits that can develop because of great adversity [ e.g. Moses, in the Bible] .
YOU ARE NOT READY FOR LEADERSHIP OR GREAT RESPONSIBILITY UNTIL YOU HAVE COME TO THE END OF YOURSELF. IF YOU THINK YOU ARE A GREAT FELLOW OR A WONDERFUL FELLOW AND EVERYONE SHOULD ACKNOWLEDGE THAT FACT THEN YOU ARE LIKELY GOING TO STUMBLE SOONER OR LATER.GREAT LEADERS ARE ACUTELY AWARE OF THEIR LIMITATIONS AND THIS MAKES THEM HUMBLE.
