The first decade can be very difficult as an immigrant living and working abroad and trying to establish yourself. This is particularly so if you are based in the cities or bigger towns where the cost of housing (rent, electricity, gas, water, refuse collection bills) can easily swallow up to 3/4 of your monthly income. Yet oftentimes many Ghanaians living abroad go without to help support folks back home. I have witnessed several cases where a relative literally working day and night and sending money to "needy" relatives later discovered that these relatives back home were living better than them. STILL, IT IS GOOD AND NECESSARY TO SUPPORT NEEDY PARENTS IF YOU CAN SPARE THE MONEY. THIS DOES NOT MEAN YOU SHOULD DEPLETE YOURSELF IN ORDER TO MEET EVERY WHIM OF UNRESONABLE AND SELF-INDULGENT RELATIVES. ALSO REMEMBER THAT YOUR OWN IMMEDIATE FAMILY MUST BE TAKEN CARE OF FIRST OF ALL.
