Ghanaian musician Nana Frema Koranteng has revealed that her husband's family initially resisted her marriage to him after she became pregnant, alleging that attempts were made to delay the union and that a friend of her mother-in-law even suggested that she abort the pregnancy.

Speaking to MzGee, Nana Frema said she was already four months pregnant when she eventually married her husband, explaining that the couple had decided to formalise their relationship after discovering the pregnancy.

According to the musician, her husband initially hesitated to tell his family about the pregnancy because he knew how they would react.

“He kept telling me, ‘I know my family. That is why I'm holding on,’” she recalled.

Nana Frema said the situation became more difficult when her husband eventually disclosed the pregnancy to his family.

She alleged that at one point, a friend of her husband's mother suggested that the pregnancy should be terminated.

“At a point, his mother's friend said we should abort the baby,” Nana Frema said.

The musician questioned why someone outside the relationship would make such a suggestion about her pregnancy.

She also claimed that her husband's family subsequently proposed that the marriage be postponed until the following year, despite the couple's decision to marry.

According to Nana Frema, when her husband asked his family why the marriage should be delayed, they could not provide a reason that satisfied him.

She said she later came to believe that the proposal to postpone the marriage was an attempt to prevent the couple from getting married.

“Apparently, looking back, it was all a plot to stop us from getting married,” she said.

Nana Frema acknowledged that she was unsure whether the entire family wanted her out of the relationship, but said the experience made her feel that she was not wanted.

Despite the opposition, she said her husband ultimately chose to proceed with the marriage.

She said one of the most difficult aspects of the situation was not simply getting married but gaining acceptance from her husband's family.

“The goal was acceptance,” she said, explaining that the situation became particularly difficult because she had previously experienced depression and felt the family tensions were affecting her psychologically.

Nana Frema said her own mother, meanwhile, was happy when she learned about the pregnancy.

She explained that her mother eventually received the news from her husband and responded by asking what the couple intended to do next.

Nana Frema and her husband eventually married while she was four months pregnant with their first child, Marshall.

The musician has since welcomed a second son, Jaden, and has spoken publicly about the challenges she experienced throughout both pregnancies and her transition into motherhood.
