‘Spirituality and positivity are intentional parts of my music’ - AratheJay

Ghanaian musician AratheJay has revealed that spirituality and positivity are deliberately woven into his music, stressing that artistes should create content that uplifts people since they will ultimately be accountable for the words they put into the world.

Speaking in an interview on TV3, the singer explained that his faith plays a central role in his artistry, influencing the messages he shares through his songs.

“It runs through all of my music no matter what it is. Spirituality, consciousness and positivity,” AratheJay said.

Explaining why he places so much emphasis on spirituality, the musician said he believes the world needs more uplifting messages.

“I think the world needs more of that than whatever it is I think I am doing. There’re so many things, but at the end of the day, it should be what builds someone that should be out there. I believe whatever I say I’m gonna be judged for it, so I should mind what I say,” he stated.

AratheJay also reflected on how his childhood in Kenya shaped his musical journey, noting that exposure to different cultures and sounds broadened his perspective as an artiste.

According to him, listening to Jamaican dancehall stars such as Vybz Kartel and Popcaan while living in Kenya, as well as Kenyan band Sauti Sol, taught him to appreciate culture and language.

“When I remember songs from Vybz Kartel and Popcaan, I think it has helped. It has helped me appreciate culture, appreciate language and understand that music is a global thing. We are global artistes, we just happen to come from this side of the world, but we need to make them appreciate our art as well,” he said.

The singer added that working with Savara of Sauti Sol on his previous album further reinforced those lessons.

As the son of a pastor, AratheJay said his Christian faith continues to influence both his personal life and career. He disclosed that he still sings in church and believes worship should be embraced by everyone, regardless of their musical abilities.

“Singing in church should be a normal thing for everyone; you just try. You don’t have to be perfect. I mean, that’s why we’re in church. There’s no one to judge us,” he said.

The musician, who worships with The Church of Pentecost, further stressed that God remains the primary audience for everything he creates.

“I believe the sole audience, primary audience, all the time is God. Every time He is my primary audience, and then I have Nyame Adom FC and all these other lovely people listening to my music. I make it a point always to be very conscious of what it is I’m saying and make sure that the primary audience is in agreement with the kind of things I’m saying; then I’m gonna put it out,” AratheJay said.
