Ghanaian actor William Lamptey has opened up about his emotional journey to winning the Africa Monologue Challenge, admitting that he is still struggling to fully process the achievement.

Speaking in an interview with Nikki Samonas on Joy Prime, Lamptey expressed gratitude to God for helping him emerge as the winner of a competition that attracted about 2,000 contestants.

“Thinking of how anxious I was and how fierce the competition got. All my friends are so talented and out of 2,000 contestants, I made it to number one.

“I’m just thankful to God for everything because there are certain things that I feel God just blesses me with and I don’t know how and why,” he said.

According to the actor, the magnitude of his achievement only began to sink in after the competition ended, as he reflected on the pressure and intensity of the journey.

“After winning the competition, I haven’t gotten a chance to process everything and I haven’t really felt anything, but I feel it’s been a long journey. I’m now realising that it hasn’t been easy at all,” he stated.

Recounting how he found himself in the Africa Monologue Challenge, Lamptey said he initially had no intention of participating.

He explained that he first heard about the competition through a friend who had taken part in a previous season. At the time, Lamptey was actively supporting his friend during the voting stage.

“I got to know about the Africa Monologue Challenge through a friend. He was part of the previous season and during the times of voting, I was helping him. I was up at dawn sending links to friends to also vote for him,” he recounted.

However, seeing the pressure his friend went through during the competition made Lamptey reluctant to participate himself.

“At first, I didn’t want to join because of the pressure that my friend went through. I said I couldn’t handle all the pressure, so I should just stay in my space,” he explained.

But a spontaneous decision during a theatre rehearsal eventually changed the course of his journey.

Lamptey said he was at a rehearsal when he realised it was the deadline for submissions. Since he had arrived early, he decided to record a monologue and submit it without expecting much.

“One time, I went for a theatre rehearsal and I was just seated there. It was the deadline for submission, so I was like, since I’m here early, I should just record something and submit. If I’m picked, fine and here we are,” he added.
