‘Ghanaian fan base culture can ruin other artistes’ – Kelvin Boy

Ghanaian musician Kelvin Boy has expressed concern over Ghana’s fan base culture, saying the constant comparisons and online attacks by supporters can ruin the careers of other artistes.

Speaking in an interview on Hitz FM, the singer said he does not appreciate fans insulting fellow artistes in an attempt to elevate him, stressing that such behaviour does not reflect positively on the artiste being praised.

“This thing then I dey complain all the time say this fanbase thing, the way we dey do am for Ghana here, e dey ruin other artistes. Me I won’t like it. The fact say they dey take somebody compare me, they dey insult the person say I better pass them. I don’t think that makes me look good,” he said.

Kelvin Boy urged fans to channel the same passion into supporting their favourite artistes instead of attacking others, insisting that there is room for everyone to thrive in the music industry.

According to him, concerts prove that music lovers are not as divided as social media often suggests because fans happily enjoy performances from multiple artistes regardless of who they originally came to support.

“When you go for show and Shatta Wale, Stonebwoy, Sarkodie, Kelvin Boy them all dey there, what they show you say the fans them be one. If this one come perform go, the same fans them go stay make this one come perform. E no be say this one then ein fans go go and this one then ein fans go come. Them dey sing everybody ein song,” he explained.

The ‘Down Flat’ hitmaker added that while everyone is entitled to have a favourite artiste, there is no justification for toxic fan wars, especially when the same fans enjoy music from different acts.

He also called on musicians to stop encouraging such behaviour, arguing that some artistes unknowingly fuel fan rivalries by applauding supporters who insult their colleagues.

“I think it’s not necessary when we, the artistes, fuel that. You understand? You feel like your fan is fighting for you. You like the way he’s insulting another artiste for you, and you dey fuel that. I don’t think it’s healthy,” Kelvin Boy stated.
