Some chiefs and queens of the Adonteng traditional area
The Akuapem Adonteng Traditional Area has concluded its seven-day Odwira Festival, marking the 200th anniversary of the revered celebration with a renewed commitment to improving healthcare in the community.
The 2026 edition of the festival began on Monday, October 12, and ended on Sunday, October 18, bringing together chiefs, queen mothers, residents, visitors and dignitaries to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Akuapem people.
One of the major highlights of the celebrations took place on Saturday, October 17, when the divisional chiefs and queen mothers of the Akuapem Adonteng Traditional Area, led by Adontenghene Otubor Gyan Kwasi, made a grand procession through the town in beautifully decorated palanquins.

Clad in colourful kente cloth, beads and other traditional regalia, they were accompanied by the sounds of traditional drums, singing and chants as they made their way to the Aburi Botanical Gardens for the grand durbar.
Addressing the gathering, Otubor Gyan Kwasi unveiled his vision for the 2026/2027 traditional year, announcing plans to establish a dialysis and sickle cell treatment centre to improve healthcare delivery in Aburi and its surrounding communities.
“Our home clinic here, we want to add another unit, a dialysis unit and a sickle cell unit. The good thing about it all is that even though we have not started, we have six dialysis machines right here in Aburi,” he said.
According to the chief, the foundation for the proposed facility has already been dug, with construction expected to begin soon.
He appealed to individuals and organisations who share the vision to support the project to ensure its successful completion and eventual operation.
The celebration experienced a brief interruption after a downpour forced activities to pause temporarily.
However, festivities resumed shortly after the rain subsided, allowing the programme to continue as scheduled.
The durbar attracted a large gathering of religious leaders, business executives, politicians, traditional authorities and other dignitaries.
The event also drew foreign visitors and many young people, highlighting the enduring cultural significance of the Odwira Festival and its ability to unite people from diverse backgrounds.
