Terry Bonchaka, Terry Nii Okang Mensah Adjetey
October 29 marks a painful chapter in Ghana’s music history: the death of Terry Bonchaka [Terry Nii Okang Mensah Adjetey], the energetic hiplife sensation whose promising career was cut short at just 21.
Known for his hit song Puulele and his unmistakable one-leg-raised dance move, Bonchaka had emerged as one of the exciting young performers in Ghana’s music scene before his life ended in a car accident on October 30, 2003.
He was reportedly returning from a performance at the Akuafo Hall Celebration at the University of Ghana when the tragedy occurred.
More than two decades later, his death remains a sobering reminder of how quickly a rising star’s journey can end, leaving behind a legacy that outlives the years he had to make his mark.
Bonchaka’s rise had been remarkably swift. He gained national attention after winning the hiplife category of the Miss Ghana competition in 2001, earning the title of Hiplife Champion. His distinctive voice, flamboyant fashion sense and energetic performances helped him stand out in a competitive music industry.
His signature dance, which involved raising one leg while performing, became closely associated with his stage identity. Songs such as Ghana Ladies, Zoozey, Lomna Va and Asem Ben Ni, alongside Puulele, helped establish his place in the memories of music lovers.
Bonchaka’s death was particularly painful because he had spent only a short time in the industry. His career had barely begun to unfold, yet he had already developed a recognisable identity that distinguished him from his contemporaries.
His influence has also been acknowledged by musicians who came after him. Dancehall star Shatta Wale, for instance, has paid tribute to Bonchaka, recalling his style and expressing a desire to bring him back if that were possible.
Today, as Ghana remembers the young musician, his story stands as both a celebration of a talent that made an early impression and a reminder of a future that was never fully realised. Though his time in the spotlight was brief, the distinctive sound, movement and personality he brought to hiplife continue to form part of the genre’s history.
