This article is full of shit. It's called African movies to differentiate from Hollywood movies, Indian movies etc. Only Ghanaian and Nigerian movies are shown because that's what is demanded by our market.

The reason that Ghanaian and Nigerian movies are being called "African Movies" is that the other countries have focused more on the soap opera format. As Ghana and Nigeria are starting to move towards the soap opera format we are going to see some more specific descriptions like Zambian soap opera, Kenyan soap opera etc... We should remember that ultimately, Nigerians took their movies world wide. They were able to get West Indians and African Americans to watch the films. History will show that these movies open up the global market for African actors/actresses and musicians.

It is not Ghanaian Movies, it is Twi or Akan Movies, that makes matters even worse for Ghana. The quality is awful, the people are ugly, the story lines are disgusting, and of course the language embarrassingly stupid. This ironically has made me recognize the beauty in Hausa, Ewe and Ga languages. They are soft-spoken and more romantic to listen to, compared to Twi. Until you recognize this problem my friend, you are just as disingenuous as small minded actors and actresses. Our problem in Ghana is that we love to compete directly with each other, house to house, street to street, township to township, then eventually ethnic to ethnic. Akans think they are in a race with all other Ghanaians, so with a little increase in numbers, all they want to do is make the world think that Ghana is an Akan nation. It is a fact, else I cannot fathom the denigrating quality of like in Accra today, compared to the 50's, 60's and early 70's. We were all well cultured and oblivious to anything except being a Ghanaian, enjoying our cultural diversity in a civil manner, and still respecting the fact that we are an "English Speaking Country"...unfortunately, that is what has earned us all of our glory. Look around the continent of Africa.

We cannot worry about Twi or Akan versus Hausa, Ewe or Ga. At the end of the day, the global market will dictate. It is clear that African movies that are in English or French with some appropriate "in context" use of local language will be the movies or miniseries to make money. Those movies would be embraced. Imagine the beginning Roots with real Gambian and other African actors and actresses utilizing English and some local languages. It would have been even more of a classic than it is today. The person who can make an entertaining and accurate Nkrumah movie or Jomo Kenyatta movie will certainly do well.

That is what the author is trying to put across but I guess many of you miss it.

American even see Canadians as different people, and likewise the good Canadians don't want to be like their obnoxious cousins, Americans. So why should we accept the fact that we are lumped together in everything. It does not help us in any other way.

We need to continue to make and sell our brands in everything differently. Our victory in this election should not be an Africa victory, but a Ghana one. This is how you will be respected and appreciated.

Do you know there is going to be Big Brother South Africa is coming back after giving way to Big Brother Africa. Probably, they have become wiser now to stop the stereotype. Africa this, Africa that... In Jan 2014 they will begin their own Big Brother Nwanzi. What that does make you feel that Ghanaians are not wiser.
Do we have Big Brother Europe. What about Big Brother North America or South America or the Caribbeans?

The TV stations, should start telling their audiences about what kind of movie they are going to show- Ghanaian, Nigerian, South African, Ugandan etc, etc movies and not just "African movies"- A good movie will sell itself. It was Nigerian who literally forced me to watch "Beyonce" part 1, because I don't have stomach for those dramas.

I can think of several reasons why "African Movies" in English are limited only to those produced Ghana and Nigeria:

South Africa has a small movie industry, and it is (still) dominated by white people.

I can think of several reasons why "African Movies" in English are limited only to those produced Ghana and Nigeria:

South Africa has a small movie industry, and it is (still) dominated by white people.

Francophone Africa prefers to import movies produced in France to making their own. (Correct me if this is incorrect).

And with the exception of Kenya, the rest of the continent is too small, too poor, or lacks the infrastructure to support luxuries like movie studios.

That means African actors looking to make it on screen have to "become" Nigerian, for all practical purposes.

Mind you, you probably have to limit yourself to Anglophone countries because GH people don't bother to learn French for example.
