Rightly or wrongly, traditionally, Ghanaians do tend to think that it is only miscreants who join the army. This impression is derived from how bad boys and illiterates were forcibly conscripted into the army as a form of punishment during the colonial era.
This impression continues to hold sway as a result of the fact that, up to today, soldiers themselves conduct themselves in a manner which gives credence to that unfavorable opinion. A good example is the very bad conduct displayed by the said soldiers towards Afia, an unarmed civilian - and a female at that.
Both our soldiers and Policemen continue to misconduct themselves in the same uncouth, vulgar and crass manner that the evil colonialists taught them to behave against native African civilians. Nothing has changed since. That is why they still dont think much of overthrowing their own national govts at the instigation of and remote-control by their colonial masters.
Up to today, our army still happily celebrates historical events in which they were shamefully misused as cannon fodder to fight colonial wars for colonial dictators against liberation fighters in Asia. This alone confirms my fears that our soldiers will not " ....resist oppressors rule" when faced with the task.
Admittedly, lot of work still needs to be done on our army to make it a truly nationalist army.
And finally, why on earth do we still need to maintain soldiers at the entrance of the GBC? Do we have soldiers at all the other radio and TV stations? Note that the devil finds work for idle hands.

I think Afia is only telling half-truths if indeed she was "maltreated" by the soldiers. The question is, why isn't Afia telling the world the full story of what transpired between her and the soldiers?
Security wise, a place like the GTV Station, all staff have to carry Pass/Photo ID cards and visitors have get security clearance and authorisation letter/note. These are professional and security measures. My guess is that those soldiers might have asked Afia for her authorisation letter before being allowed entry. May be, just may be she felt being a TV Personality she should be identified and given access. This is where arguments and confrontations might have occurred.
As Ghanaians, we should learn to be professional. If Afia was invited by GTV managers over the phone for a programme, the managers should have prepared her security clearance/authorisation letter either through the post or for her to pick it up at Security point.
