Hardly a day goes by without a report on a child defilement case in the media, and according to child rights groups working on the issue, at least 10 girls under the age 16 are defiled every day in the country.

They say that even though the cases reported in themselves are alarming, they constitute only about 10% of such abuses, as the overwhelming majority of the cases are hushed.

The penalty for defilement was increased in the 1998 amendment to the Criminal Code (ACT 29) to a minimum of seven and a maximum of 25 years without an option of a fine. Yet recent studies show that sexual abuse of children in Ghana is still alarming high.

Figures from the then Ministry for Women and Children Affairs (MOWAC) put the annual case of reported defilement cases at around 800 a year, but according to one of the groups working to stop the practice, Light For Children Ghana, this is only a small portion of an alarming national catastrophe.

For this year alone, Ghana News Agency bulletins have been recording an average of about three defilement case a day.

The majority of the defilement cases are hushed, according to child psychologists, because in some case the victims do not understand what has happened to them or are afraid of being shamed or accused of being bad girls.

Some guardians also prefer to keep such incidence to themselves.

This is especially the case where the abusers happen to be family members. There have also been cases of neighbors, teachers, pastors and all sorts of people abusing girls some as young as two years.

There are also instances where guardians go to the police, but later stop following the case and give up because they find the processes cumbersome, studies indicate.

Making the situation worse, according to Mrs Juliana Azumah, the last Minister for MOWAC, was that the over 50,000 children living and working on the country’s streets were often taken advantage of by sexual predators or run to commercial sex as way of making a living.

Also in certain parts of the country such as in parts of the Upper West Region, for instance, Action Aid Ghana, reports that an average of 50 young girls below the ages of 15 and 17 are abducted for marriage every year in the Jirapa, Lambussie/Karni and Sissala East districts.

Figures at the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) National Secretariat indicate that boys are also sometimes abused sexually, but the vast majority of the victims are girls.

A one-time Imam in the Ghana Armed Forces, Sheikh Salawati Imam Rashid, has made a scary disclosure about how some {{politicians in the country buried a number of albinos and children alive}}, in their quest for political power.

The spirits of these persons, whom he said did not die natural deaths, will continue to haunt this country in the form of road accidents and other calamities unless a spiritual atonement is sought.

"The spirits of these innocent souls that were killed and buried alive will unquestionably haunt the country because they did not die natural deaths," he said in a statement issued in Tamale.

Sheikh Salawati Imam Rashid Qutubu Zamaan, who is the Spiritual Leader and Head of the Salawati Mission of Ghana, based in Tamale, was the first trained and commissioned Imam/Officer in the Ghana Armed Forces, which he left as a Captain after about a decade's service.

Until President John Evans Atta Mills considers having the country exorcised, all his efforts at putting things right will come to naught, he said with a certain robustness and confidence.

Albinos in Accra under the aegis of Society of Albinos-Ghana (SOA-G) recently organized a press conference during which they expressed apprehension about their precarious situation in the country, having become ritualistic materials for money and power seekers.

"During the elections, not only were animals slaughtered and sacrificed; but some human beings were buried alive, including albinos, deep in the forests," Sheikh Rashid said.

The accidents which swept across the country immediately after the 2008 elections were a sign and warning to Ghanaians, he said, adding that "those accidents were not mere accidents but had spiritual connotations and meanings to them."

That Imam Rashid has made such a revelation about the extent to which politicians can go, adds credence to the apprehension of the pigment-deficient humans, otherwise called 'ofli gyato'.

In Tanzania, albinos are endangered as they are sought for spiritual interventions by jujumen in the East African country- a trend which appears to be gradually rearing its head on our shores by Imam Rashid's revelation.

Ghanaian politicians who sought the spiritual interventions, he said, consulted voodoos, mountain and river gods, as well as marine spirits, both in Ghana and outside, during which they made pledges to the shrines and deities.

"These devilish acts will bring calamities and hardships to the people of this country," he warned.

His revelations appear to tie in with what a number of Christian clergies have already made about the bloody esoteric engagements by politicians before the last elections.

These men of God have variously attributed the recent road carnage in the country to the spiritual undertakings by some politicians and warned that until a form of exorcism is undertaken, these would continue.

As a result of the aforementioned bizarre deeds, he predicted, "the country will experience a lot of difficulties. Disasters like bloodshed, fire outbreaks, famine, and conflicts will befall the nation, unless we divinely cleanse the country."

As for the bloodbath on our roads, he made a chilling revelation that they would continue, asking that "the churches, mosques and other religious sects in the country should come together and ensure that the devil does not rule Ghana."

He expressed surprise that Ghanaian politicians went to the extent of going beyond the extraordinary and making human sacrifices, a development which, he noted, has attracted the ire of God.

"My predictions have always come to pass as evidenced by the spate of road accidents that hit the country claiming hundreds of lives and destroying property," he said.

In order that the country may realize its dream of attaining the middle income status, there is the need, he said, for the country to spiritually cleanse itself.

He averred that Ghana is a religious country and so her citizens should avoid following the paths of civilizations of yore which rose to fame but fell from the grace of God, and were therefore visited by spiritual calamities.

Imam Rashid is a household name in Tamale, especially among the youth.

Over 70% of our ‘honourables’ are ‘dishonourable’ – Prof Adei

A former Rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Professor Stephen Adei has indicated that Ghana is capable of reducing corruption to the barest minimum if citizens desist from hailing corrupt government officials and individuals.

According to him, the fight against corruption is being impeded because “those who are dishonourable are called honourables.”

“We cannot build a nation on that basis when about 70 percent of all those who call themselves honourable are totally dishonourable and these are the people whom we must hold accountable,” he said.

He bemoaned the situation where people with ill-gotten wealth are hailed as heroes and advised that the wealth of politicians must be properly scrutinized. Citing a recent phenomenon where most wealthy Ghanaians are buying properties in Dubai and elsewhere, Professor Adei called for scrutiny by the public before hailing such personalities.

“Our leaders spend their holidays abroad and they save their money in Switzerland and other places so Dubai and other things have become their new havens. They are buying flats in the deserts! Are your grandchildren going to live in those flats?” he queried.

He made these remarks at the launch of a book titled; ‘Taming a Monster’ by former Korle-Bu Chief Executive, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng.

In his address, he observed that in Ghana, “leadership is cause, everything else is effect” and thus asked for a fundamental change in attitude where the Ghanaians seem to reward corrupt persons rather than vilify them.

In recent years, corruption has become a topical issue in Ghana following high profile corruption cases which rocked the nation.

Varied suggestions have been given on the best way to fight the problem but Prof Adei is recommending that it is high time the nation changed its laws to effectively deal with corrupt persons.

He argued that “we don’t have to prove that somebody is corrupt. Everybody, what you have, you should be able to account for it. That’s all!” In a related development, the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) has condemned the nation’s asset declaration regime, describing it as shambolic.

According to the anti-graft agency, it is not enough to have a law requiring public officers to declare their assets when the public cannot access it. Speaking to Citi News, the Programmes Director at GII, Mary Addah charged Parliament to expedite action on the revisions to the asset declaration laws.

“Currently as the law stands, it’s nothing to write home about. We have remissions and it’s in Parliament now so if these remissions are put in place, whatever you came into office with is published and made transparent for every Ghanaian to see that when you came into office, you had one car but the in four years when you are going out, you now have four cars,” she said.

“Then the people of Ghana will begin to ask how you financed the four cars on the salary you are on. Not just the politician but everybody in a place of power should be accountable to the people of Ghana,” she added.
