The whites who come to Ghana and other African countries to make a living do it precisely because they cannot cut it in their own countries. Most of them are actually social rejects and find it difficult to cultivate relationships. You should see them in their real element, living under poor conditions in very lonely circumstances. Ewes have been weaving kete a long time before the Asante kingdom was founded, Arab and European records show. In the past, well into the C19th, every town and village in Eweland had a weaver. Was it the same in the Asante Kingdom? How come it is woven only at the Bonwire enclave?

During the American Civil War, Europeans even tried to get Ewes to weave for them! Akan, of course, were raffia weavers, not cotton weavers, and no European wanted to wear raffia!

BTW, the Bonwire kente is actually the lower quality, single thread commercialised one. The Kpetoe weavers had retained the original double thread quality one. You should have read what the experts wrote about the Agbozume weavers adopting the single thread one for commercial purposes too. Lamentation! Lamentation!

Luckily, they are blazing a trail weaving the quality one at Badagry, Nigeria. Big business there. From small beginnings in the mid to late '80s, it is now an occupation with 100s of weavers!

The question of why only Bonwire produces kente, has to do with control from the Chiefs back then. kente was and is still considered a material of royal opulance, thus the need by the chiefs to control its production.

There is nothing wrong with other tribes adopting what is mostly associated with others. We are all Ghanaians and must share our Cultures. There is nothing wrong with Ewes taking to Kente Weaving and establishing Festivals to promote the iconic Craft.

What seems to have generated all this backlash is a certain surreptitious attempt by some dubious Academics, ostensibly Ewe, to claim ownership of the origin of the Craft and also Okomfo Anokye as all being Ewe. It seems like an 'in-your-face' snatching away of Ashanti or Akan Pride by these Ewes.

Such dubious claims had left a sour feeling in the mouth of many Akans who attach their very ancestral roots and survival throughout the ages to those globally known facts about them.

The Akans feel robbed by such clever Academic 'theft' by those Ewe 'Scholars'. This is what the fuss about the Kente seems to have originated from.

I guess, it is one thing sharing skills and cultural landmarks and items, etc. And it is another pursuing a deliberate cultural campaign to undermine other folks culture.

Nevertheless, I would admonish the concerned Akans to relax on this issue and simply count on the acute difference in the design diversity of the Kentes of the different areas to speak for themselves.

Even though sometimes an entity copying an original idea could improve on its quality, the trend with the Agbotime Kente has yet to catch up with those of Bowire and other places in Ashanti.

And no matter what alphabets are used to spell the name 'Okomfo Anokye', be it Notsie or whatever, and using the German alphabets or English Alphabets to spell the name, the truth and authenticity of his roots would forever be enshrined in Ashanti History. Folks need not go to War on this. Maybe Avatime and Agbotime Kente would some day surpass Bonwire Kente in quality and diversity. So, what?

Ford of the USA has long been credited with the invention of the Automobile, but even in the USA herself, today, most folks would prefer to ride Japanese vehicles for their better quality. That does not make Japanese any more human than the Americans. So, let's live with the competition. It is all how folks organize it. We can cut the insulting edges out of it to make a healthy competition that could even attract more foreign tourists to bolster our mutual wealth. So, let us cut the insults and the puerile attempts to claim what really may not belong to us culturally for purposes of demeaning the others. Such claims depicts us as very weak-minded and still fighting unnecessary illusive superiority complex feuds.
