I have not had the opportunity to have listened to the said Atta guy and how he spoke at the widely discussed presentation ceremony abroad.

What caught my attention to this subject however is Socrates Sarfo's unacceptable defense of mediocrity - in this case, the mediocrity in the usage of the English language.

The quality of the Ghanaian has sunk so low that, currently, 'everything and anything goes' in this country and Ghanaians have as a result, degenerated to the standard level of pigs in almost everything that we do, thanks to people like this Sarfo chap. His films and almost all other Ghanaian films - I must say with the exception of the ones which are produced by that very cultured, enlightened and intelligent lady-producer (I do not know her name), depict the kind of backwardness and 'bush' attitudes that Sarfo himself personalizes.

Not too long ago, the Ghanaian was considered amongst the most educated - in terms of meaningful quality, in the world, to the extent that even our Spoken and written English was considered parallel with and at times better than that of the original speakers. The ability of Ghanaians abroad to out-speak the Queens language of the native-speakers on their own turf, earned Ghanaians greater credits internationally. Ghanaians formed the biggest bulk of translators of international languages at international conferences worldwide.

Ghanaians used to laugh and scorn the way Asians, East Africans, South Africans, North Africans and even some of our own West African brothers like, Sierra Leoneans and Nigerians, for their inability to live up to acceptable standards of the English language. We used to say of them that they were unenlightened or uncivilized.

So what has happened since then?

Since the overthrow of the iconic Nkrumah govt in 1966, Ghanaians have either been forced by the lethargic imperialist system that replaced the ambitious one that Nkrumah established, to adopt virtually everything that runs counter to our progress as a people, or we have wilfully drifted into the doldrums of despair and anomie and lost our initiative to excel. In the domain of languages, even Nigeria who had the most laughable and weird accents of the English language, seem to have now surpassed the Ghanaian in this respect whilst Ghanaians have now surpassed the Nigerians in the crass illiterate and unenviable standards of speaking pigeon English.

For the information of Sarfo and other inherent illiterates like him, English is a recognized international language and the better one speaks it, the more one has the chance to 'mingle or wash your hands with the elders'. You can deny or reject this at your own peril. Speaking bad English - especially in public, is nothing to be proud about. It simply shows that whatever our teachers taught us for over 20 years of education of that language or, even by the medium of that language whilst learning other subjects, did not, for some reason, sink into the thick skulls of people who do not do well in their efforts at spoken English. Defending this illiterate trait by such nonsense such as environmental affectations, will not wash with any discerning person. I am not too sure if Sarfo likewise ignores the standards of spoken and written English of his own children – if he has any, in their educational pursuits.

It is people with the mentality of Sarfo that is the problem in this country. Their world-view is so limited that they seek comfort in the backward and unproductive confines of incompetence and failure.

Actors and actresses hardly interest me because I know what they are generally made of and how they end up.

I hope that your own clumsy reaction to my comment will begin to stimulate your brain to understand what I was going on about concerning the need to understand and to be able to express oneself ably in the English language.
