Toward the Ghana planning and development agenda.
As far as we are concerned, if this is a true account, this is one of the more responsible statements we've read coming from the mouth of anyone in the new Akufo Addo government, "...to discuss ways of working together to advance the president’s development agenda through the Long-Term National Development Plan (LTNDP)...".
We are encouraged that the mis-match of NPP policy statements, including some in the 2016 NPP manifesto itself, will be winnowed down for common sense and tried and true principles of planning, objectivity, and non-partisanship, to prevail in the interest of all Ghanaians.
Peace!

City planning in Ghana is a mess because there are no zoning and subdivision regulations to guide growth. Municipalities also need to prepare their own development plans to guide growth. The plans could form the basis for the 1-district 1-factory projects. KNUST is producing development/policy planners who know nothing about zoning and subdivision regulations! The new minister needs to address these issues to restructure urban planning and avoid the annual flooding and fire outbreaks in the country.

The question is do governments implement what the professional tell them?
When a minister is assigned to an area he has no or little knowledge of and such minister is not prepared to listen to the professional what do you expect them to do.
We are in a country where regulations and common practice are difficult to follow through, how often does city Authorities complain about siting of gas/petrol stations, and what does those in decision making do, cos they themselves own such companies and properties.we need to address this issue holistically and not to apportion blame.planners @knust are best ,cos coming to UK I can tell you my work ethics in council is highly appreciated

I'm also a proud product of Planning at KNUST. In addition, I've 3 different degrees in planning from Canada and have taught planning in the US for more than a decade. I've also taught planning briefly in Ghana as a visiting professor. I can authoritatively tell u that the planning program at KNUST doesn't equip anyone to do proper urban landuse planning! I know the truth hurts but it must be told if we really want to address planning problems in our beloved country. If u still doubt me ask yourself if you really know what a zoning ordinance contains.

Right on point, I am a Urban and Regional Planner, here in the US, and can attest to that.
I don't even think they have long Range Plans.

I like the discussion between the two top officials. There should be a current discussion where accra ,tema ,kumasi and takoradi will be taken off the national budget. There should be effective address system they can pilot it in cantoment, ridge, east, west and north legon, mamprobi, dansoman, kaneshi etc. There shouod be effective way of collecting property tax ,it should not be that high to deter individuals but reasonable to encourage payment which will be used to maintain those communities.East legon alone can be piloted have it own police runned by taxes generated from there. It can have a central ecg point where they can know the amount of electricity megawatts been used by east legon and also know the amount accounted for then they can know the waste from which they will know the number not paying for electricity from there their target will be to reduce the waste,it can be done for water. The profit generated will go into solar street light and security cameras for the police in the east legon area this can then be replicated in will structured areas but government will have the responsibility of taking care of high cost infrastructure. The clause will be any official who comes and use the money to increase his allowance or buy luxury vehicle should be made to pay, first deduct from his bank account ,if not enough his pension,if not enough sell his personal car,if not enough his house after getting our money back give him 5 years imprisonment.
