Host of NEAT FM’s morning show, Kwesi Aboagye had the toughest time controlling Law lecturer, Moses Foh-Amoaning and Mr. George Aggrey, Board Chairman of Amnesty International Ghana during a telephone interview on whether Ghana should or should not accept homophile practice.
Both resource persons held different views on the subject – however, their heated argument led to some personal attacks during the live interview on NEAT FM’s morning show 'Ghana Montie'.
Mr. George Aggrey who failed to openly dismiss claims regarding his alleged status as a homosexual was described by the renowned lawyer as a disgrace to his entire family – a comment the Human Rights Group, Amnesty board chairman did not take lightly.
“You are a grown up person, were you taught by your parents to have sex through your anus? Are you gay? Do you have sex through your anus? Why are you lying to Ghanaians that homosexuality is good?” Moses Foh-Amoaning quizzed but was not answered.
Genesis of the gay issue
The Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Mike Oquaye when addressing some members of the Royal House Chapel on Monday, February 20, 2017, called for the amendment of the country’s laws to completely ban homosexuality and make it illegal.
He described homosexuality as despicable and against the country’s culture which cannot be accepted.
He said: “It is unfortunate that people have become so liberal that they will want to liberalise Christianity…even priests are approving of homosexuality and allowing a man and a man [to] marry, a woman and a woman [to] marry and these are manifest abominations.”
“I trust that with your kind of insistence, the Parliament of Ghana…will find its way clear in strengthening the laws to ban homosexuality as they exist. As for this, may God forbid that it becomes a Ghanaian culture,” he added.
Amnesty stance on gay issues
The Human Rights Group, upon the Speaker’s call, launched a strong resistance against the amendment of the country’s laws to completely ban homosexuality and make it illegal.
According to the group’s board chairman, Mr. George Aggrey, it will be ‘dangerous’ and tendency of infringing the fundamental and universal rights of those engaged in homosexuality.
“Everyone has their freedom and rights and must not be shattered by any law. Our position is that it is a right for every individual to practice what they want. If the person thinks homosexuality is good, allow the person to practice it. That is their right,” he said.
“If our culture is against gayism, then we must educate our children when they are young to abstain. If the person is above 18, then you can’t force the person to stop that in any way. There’s no law in Ghana that is against homosexuality, there is no law,” he noted.
Lawyer Foh-Amoaning’s position
The law lecturer, however, schooled Mr. Aggrey that “There are laws in Ghana and homosexuality is not accepted in our culture. Inasmuch as we have our rights, we don’t have the right to do everything. Can I have sex with my mother because I have my right? Mr Aggrey, you are a disgrace to your own family.”
“Mr. Aggrey is a homosexual and lying to Ghanaians. I am putting it to you [Aggrey] that you are practising gayism. You are a disgrace to your family. How can you admit anal sex is a right,” he charged.

Homosexuality is two people agreeing to have sex in a different way. It doesn't affect anybody like stealing or murder does. Do you arrest couples who have sex both vaginally and rectally? Whiles you abhor it they choose to do that. If the woman disagrees and she is forced that becomes a crime. I don't think everybody agrees to oral sex but it is an agreement between two people without effect on anybody as long as you do it privately. That is why fornication is a sin religiously but not a crime in the country's laws. It is a private agreement between 2 people.

The speaker of Parliament of Ghana must know he must be neutral in all affairs. If he wants to go to heaven, it must not be at the expense of other people's freedom. His being Christian and a pastor are not the reasons for him becoming the speaker of parliament. I hope he is not aware why the speaker of Parliament in the U.K. is being asked to step down because of his disclosure that he voted against Brexit.
Fo- Amoaning must recognize the rights of people to their freedom in so far as the exercise of such freedom does not infringe on others. He must know that there are better lawyers and Christians than he is in America and elsewhere who have accepted homosexuality and there are others like him who do not like homosexuality but have kept their views to themselves recognizing the rights of others. His attack on the guy were very personal and unfortunate coming as it were from a teacher of law. We must learn to recognize the freedom of each other and tolerate deviant behaviors. How can we suppose homosexuals "chose" their sexual orientation? Did you "choose" not to be attracted to a man,or you get attracted naturally to a woman? Same way that you don't consciously "choose" to be attracted to a woman,so do they feel! At least that's what they say! Do you know the number of gays that hate themselves for the anguish we cause them,and who as a result wish they didn't have that orientation because of the stigma we have wrapped around their necks?Why all this hate towards them when their sexuality does not affect you or my life in any way? Do we hate people for being autistic,or try to understand them? Such should be our attitude towards people who are different from us one way or the other! Our attitude towards homosexuality is to recognize them as fellow human beings and to do scientific research as to their sexual behaviour. There's this notion that "oh they can't do that because even animals don't do that". I used to think so too but there's scientific observation of homosexual behaviour in animals. About 11% of mammals exhibit homosexual behaviour! It's natural. Let's change our attitude when we observe something strange in our environment by doing research to understand it instead of pouring out religious emotions and hate. That's the difference between the advanced nations and us: Attitude! It's this same uncivilized, stupid and rash outpouring of hate and emotions that made some men strip a lady naked and dehumanised her for stealing in kejetia recently. Let's grow up black people.

Do they also have the right to be who they are because their partners are in consent and choose to be in that form of relationshio? If the West can criminalize Polygamy and Polyandry because their culture does not accept it, then likewise, Africans will also not accept homosexuality because our culture does not accept it. You see, the question is not whether Dr. Aggrey would or would not like his wife to sleep with another woman. In fact, lesbianism is strongly believed to have long been exhibited among our female students, beginning at Secondary School and Training College level. The Girls used to call their lesbian partners 'Supi'. The School authorities all knew about this behavior being prevalent in almost every School or College and never or seldom acted to ban it.
So, we must not act like homosexuality and Sodomy never existed in Ghana till the current push by the Amnesty International for us to be acceptable to or, at least, tolerant of it.
Now, the case of the Amnesty International and other organizations supporting the LGBTs is predicated more on the rights of the individuals to live and choose how to live their private lives. The AI is not imposing its morals on us, as a society, and Country. But it is telling us to be mindful of not encroaching on the private rights of these people.
Let's face it, while it has been always strange and lewdly regarded in our Culture, Lesbianism even if discovered between two females wasn't treated as horrible or disdainful as Gayism. It was Gayism that was more frightening to our folks. And I guess it is because of the intrusive nature of it (Punt intended), and the fact that its ancillary symptoms were more pronounced and obvious oddities in our cultural expectations.
Now, as we advance rapidly into the new realm of social refinement, the question we need to ask is whether we are capable of absorbing the cultural shock of the reality of homosexuality that those involved in it have for long kept secret or low-key. Can our Society remain morally strong even as we tolerate those who may come out to display their homosexuality? Do we have what it takes to cohabit with these folks without feeling our sheer existence threatened?
The questions of morality as drawn from the Holy Books, the Bible or the Quran, that we variously keep referring to are only extensions of the cultural dilemma.
So, are we morally purified as a country to ban Homosexuality? Or, to what degree do we feel pious by any level of that behavior among us? Would we be better off leaving the status quo where we know some Citizens may be practicing that in secret, or we should allow them to boldly display the behavior as do the rest of us who are straight?
Such is the debate we need to have. And not the exchange of personal insults and implicit violence some are threatening others with.

The argument for or against Homosexuality gets lost to reality and resolution when we dwell solely on what the Bible says about it. The Buddhists, for example, may have their own moral assessment of the practice. And if we do not have any legal grounds to ban Buddhism in Ghana, and supposing the practice is acceptable to those practicing it, why would we, for example, be enacting laws to restrict them?
That is the reason why we ought to fully debate on this issue, looking at it from all angles and not just what the Bible says. After all, we are not necessarily ruled only by what is in the Bible.
Moreover, do those of us who claim to be Christians always follow what is in the Bible? Would we want the State to legislate against every conceivable behavior the Bible deems a sin? We would all be in jail by the time reach 17 years of age. Don't you think? Or, should we decide to segregate from, say, all those who commit adultery, or steal, or lie?
You see, Jesus even admonished us, especially, Christians, to give unto Ceasar that which is Ceasar's and unto God that which is God's. That means we could cohabit with those who are yet to embrace Christianity as we believe it to be.
As much as we must always strongly discourage against sin, evil and anything that is criminal, we are supposed to do so with a certain level of empathy and understanding of where the others are coming from. It takes poignant evangelism to change those we think are not doing what Jesus asks us to. Jesus does not expect us to take arms to slaughter those we think are unrighteous, or sinful.
So, every case of perceived immorality must be seriously but empathetically dealt with, in order not to turn us also into the perpetrators of some other evil the Bible wants us to refrain from.
This is the reason why we are not supposed to mix Secular politicking with Religious directives.
I hope that helps trim the debate down to fit into the necessary channel.

Heterosexual and Homosexual are all social constructs. They are simply different ways people express their sexual orientations, period. A hetero is not better than a homo!
Just as in Jesus' day Tax Collectors were considered sinful because by their profession, they come in contact with all shades of people so are homosexuals detested because they do not have sex the way other people do -- or is it because the anus is 'filthier" than the "vag"?
In short my point is do not criminalize, bastardize or stigmatize the other because he/she is doing something very different from what you know.
When the colonialists came to Africa/Ghana, they did the same thing. They condemned every traditional practice and belief because they found them strange and different from what they knew.

However, my little knowledge in biology tells me that, during fertilisation, a lot of things can go wrong. We accept albinos as humans. Their skin pigmentation is not normal. Is it not possible that, some people may for example appear male but have female traits? I'm talking about intersex and transgender people. For example the Olympic athlete Caster semenya from South Africa has a vagina but testes inside her. Recently, she got married to another woman. Would u blame her 4 that? While I believe the majority of gay and lesbians are "fake", I believe there are a few who may genuinely suffer from gender identity crises and should be understood.
