Former First Lady Lordina Mahama turns 60 years today, Monday, 6 March 2017, the day the nation celebrates its 60 years of independence.

Her husband, former President John Dramani Mahama, wished her “more years and more strength.”



In line with Ghana's constitution, Mrs Mahama became Ghana’s First Lady when her husband became President on 24 July 2012 on the death of his predecessor John Evans Atta Mills.

During her time as First Lady, Mrs Mahama was elected President of the Organisation of African First Ladies Against HIV and AIDS (OAFLA) and sworn into office in 2015 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

For her limitless zeal to the role and her ability to transform the organisation and its work, she was awarded by the United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) for her work with OAFLA on fighting the menace on the continent.

She was also adjudged the winner of the Women Empowerment Award by the Abuja- based Organisation African Achievers Award for achieving commendable milestones in her work to improve the lot of women in the field of socio- economic development, enterprise and motivation of others.
