  Unbelievable the lunacy that has gripped the right-wing over the restoration of the rightful name of our international airport which was illegally changed by the illegal, military regime. It doesn't even make sense for there to be a bill before parliament in order to change an illegal act by an illegal regime! But then again we are hearing all kinds of lamentations from the neo-colonialist, errand boy camp. Afenyo Markin makes the argument based strictly on a pitiful tribalist lamentation. Removing Kotoka's name, he sobs, deprives the nation of Ewe honorees! Markin's Ewe heroes are not distinguished composer Phillip Gbeho or industrialist Mrs. Esther Ocloo (née Nkulenu), to mention a few. No, it has to be coup leader, a mercenary and a murderer with absolutely no national achievement to show for!

  The National Liberation Council named that airport in honour of Kotoka, their fellow NLC member after his demise at the hands of rebellious soldiers staging a counter-coup attempt. You mention that the name is recognized globally, but most folks outside Ghana have no clue who Kotoka was. You also bring up the issue of regionalism, referencing the region and tribe that Kotoka hailed from. Ghanaians advocating a change of that airport's name have not made any reference to Kotoka's tribe; rather, the argument for the change of name has always to do with naming the nation's main airport after a man who was leader of a coup that ousted an elected government. Ghana does not recognize coups, and it makes no sense to honour a coup-maker by naming an airport after him. History should tell you that Kotoka was part of the coup that overthrew an elected government, and that country that very recently was prosecuting Ghanaians suspected of plotting a coup against the Akufo-Addo government has no business being hypocritical by clinging on to a past mistake that deserves correction. There's no need for rethinking; the airport needs to revert to its original name, Accra International Airport. Ghana cannot, and should not, continue to glorify coups by having the name of a coup leader etched on that airport in Accra.
