If the webmaster mistakenly puts GHP as a byline to an article authored by you, is that such a big deal as to prompt you to write a whole article about? Is it not just for you to write a mail to point out the mistake to him? How many times has he done that to you?

Often the webmaster quickly corrects such mistakes. If he doesn't do so, it's because of pressure of work but he makes sure he does if you remind him repeatedly.

The webmaster works on ghanaweb as a pastime. He has his own salaried work far away from the pages of ghanaweb. He is hard pressed to it deciding which corrected versions of articles to post. If you're lucky, he'll post the corrected version. Often he posts the very first one he sees. Some times he'll even post BOTH versions and remove one much later on in the day. It is not anything he does intentionally. And he does it to everybody, not only to you.

Okoampa has nothing to do with the management of ghanaweb. His personal relationship to the site is limited to sending his articles on a daily basis to the webmaster.

If the webmaster makes a mistake, just mail him and tell him about it. There's no need writing a feature article about that. The man hasn't got time to read through all articles and edit them. That is why you have to read through your articles very carefully BEFORE sending it to him. If after all this you're still not satisfied with the webmaster's ways, there a last option left to you: EXIT. I don't think people will miss you much. Better writers have stopped too.

Indeed, this is the second time someone is confirming that the webmaster, Mr. Akoto, actually runs this portal not on a full time. Though one would applaud the webmaster for creating an avenue for some Ghanaians to express their opinions, I humbly believe that a critical look should be taken at the level of ethnocentrism and unpatriotism being exhibited by some columnists.

I understand the concerns of Mr. Thompson but I hope he would bear with the webmaster on account of the numerous engagements he is said to have.

I suspect that the commentator named Sani must be very close to the webmaster to have had such wealth of information about his schedules. But the statement that Mr. Thompson can choose the exit door is indeed unfortunate. Some of us who visit this portal to read the various opinions expressed by experts and novices.

I believe in Ghana! And I hope Mr. Thompson would continue to shoot at the tragedy that is hobbling the progress of our dear nation. I rest my case.

Kofi Thompson has now become a daily Ghanaweb columnist, thanks to Francis Akoto. He does not see the need to write an article to thank the webmaster for giving him writing space on a daily basis but thinks it's important to write a full article lambasting Francis Akoto.

Like someone indicated, a personal e-mail to the webmaster would have been more appropriate. Is Mr. Thompson not biting the hand that feeds him? Shame on you, Sir!

Those of you who have been on ghanaweb for all these so many years will know that Kofi Thompson's is not the very first article complaining about various aspects of the running of ghanaweb. Many people have done so and pieces have been written complaining and giving different suggestions. Even when some two years ago ghanaweb changed its outlook to the present one, many people complained bitterly about the new colours and called for a return to the old ones.

One thing you will all notice is that ghanaweb does not always bother to change on account of the complaints of its "clients". One of the persistent requests is that the site should have additional help to edit articles. But the owners have always turned a deaf ear to this request. Some people have left the site on account of this. Those of us who choose to stay have learnt to accommodate and accept things. This is the reason why I am asking the likes of Thompson to make sure that they edit their works carefully before sending them on. The webmaster will NEVER do that for him.

I think Thompson's complaint of a wrong byline is a minor issue. All he has to do is to ask the webmaster to make a correction and he often does for such things. THOMPSON DOES NOT NEED TO WRITE AN ARTICLE ABOUT SUCH A MINOR THING! Thompson can write an article suggesting improvements that can be made to ghanaweb but not to complain about a minor mistake that the webmaster has made.

It is true that the webmaster can improve things considerably but he is still doing a yeoman's job and to make a public issue of a minor mistake is a bit unfair. In the beginning, he used to read all features and edit them slightly. Go back ten years ago and you will see that. But now, it is clear that he receives some twenty new articles every day. And he has refused to discriminate by publishing every artice he gets, as is. His one policy is to give EVERYBODY a voice. There are advantages and disadvantages to this move and we have to, at some level, accept it. It is also unfair to accuse the webmaster of being politically biased. He has posted articles representing all viewpoints.

Please, note that I offered Thompson the EXIT move AS A LAST OPTION. I didn't just say he should f..k off if he doesn't like the way things are.

Thank you guys. And Afreh Manu, thank you for your input. It's a long time we read something from you. Some of us are itching to. You write so well no editor will dare touch your work! I hope your studies are going well. Cheers.

Hmm! As one of the pioneering adherents of Ghanaweb, I think I can say a few words on this issue.

Yes, I am aware that Francis started this site on a part-time basis while a full time NOKIA systems engineer based in Finland. The pressure forced him to team up with the chap in Amsterdam who seemed to be more into news from Ghana, with his own site then.

I mistakenly sent the initial draft of two articles as one, instead of the completed one. When I saw it online, I was mortified and Francis quickly helped to remedy by substituting it. So, in effect, Francis does help to correct errors like that. Something went amiss in the cases of non-response cited by Mr Thompson. I don't expect him though to edit my articles, as he doesn't have the time. That's why a self-editing mechanism for those vexing typos, malapropism, etc., like on SIL for members would be fine!

I submitted sometime back proposals to Francis and his partner for a subscription only portal where serious articles of even academic nature, with refs. and even peer reviewed, can be posted and people using only their real names can post and comment on articles there. No monikers ever and it'd be moderated! That should help tremendously to uplift the image Ghanaweb now has as the yellow page website of the Ghana cyberspace sphere. It even has its own Casual site for those interested in sex matters. On my few visits there years back (it lacks a page 3 girl, unfortunately:-)), I observed that it is quite a more civilised forum, compared to the Opinion and SIL sites. I suspect that's due to apparently some Westerners who patronise it too. I've to check it to see what they are saying abt the homophobia against gays and lesbians in Ghana.

Now, when Ghanaweb started, it was on SIL that the goons who started the ethnic bashing tirade, by targeting Ewes, flocked. Of course, we of the Moral Brigade waded in and took them on, just as we did on Okyeame. I stoutly defended Francis for allowing all the craps said about Ewes to be said, so that we could tackle them. Of course, people like Seckago stepped in to bash Asantes too, even if the culprit wasn't an Asante! That also gave me the opp. to correct him and others too. I personally sold relevant history books to Seckago and was one of the first persons he disclosed his true identity to. Things I wrote led to some Asantes, Gas, Dagbons, etc., etc. to go and do their own researches, having not read Pol. Science nor History before. So, I can say here that Kante (he was into finance and investment) brought from the library a number of books, all the way from Amsterdam to London, thinking I hadn't read those books already. So behind the ferment and the vitriol, something positive was happening. SIL or Ghanaweb provides the vent not only to let out steam but actually forge new understanding too, at least among a few relevant people. As for the hoi polloi akin to the crowd that gathered at the fumity woman's joint in Thomas Hardings' The Mayor of Casterbridge, or in our own akpeteshie or pito bars, they belong to what a Ga friend from the Moral Brigade days had labelled "The Brotherhood of Nitwits", full of "crapology"; there is not much we can do about them.

BTW, Sani, if you are reading this, you made good points but you don't have to tell Mr Thompson to beat it if he is absolutely not satisfied.

My defense is of the webmaster against the specific accusations of Kofi Thompson. Kofi Thompson has been writing for ghanaweb for some 5 years or so. The webmaster makes the genuine mistake of putting a wrong byline to his article and not posting his corrected version and instead of writing a personal email to the webmaster to ask him to make the corrections and admonish him if he wants to, he decides to make a public spectacle of the whole issue and "lambaste" the webmaster before everybody. That is unfair.

This is notwithstanding the fact that we are all agreed that ghanaweb must improve its ways.

Thompson's gripe is shared by many, but then again, Ghanaweb's pioneering efforts in providing a forum for Ghanaians to air their pet grievances, be it political, economic and social, are being threatened by its inability to do due diligence to articles submitted for publication....there are for instance, selective censorship of articles the keepers at the website won't publish for reasons so absurd it is laughable, and yet the same website would let articles calculated to incite tribal animosities, ad-hominem attacks on government officials, sitting presidents are convenient targets for some of these lunatics...Sarpong, Adofo, Ahoamfe etc, to see the light of day....it is a double-standard.

Perhaps, Ghanaweb does not care to see its reputation ruined by frivolous pieces and its abject failure to employ a competent editor to go through submitted pieces with a fine comb....some of us will do for them pro bono if contacted....the website despite its glaring shortcomings, still has a lot to offer and we have to be mindful of that fact..

He is publicly castigating the webmaster for mistakenly putting a wrong byline to an article he authored when all he should have done is to have sent a personal email to the webmaster asking him to correct what is a genuine mistake.

Mojingles, have you submitted articles to the webmaster which were not posted? Tell us all about that, please, and the absurd reasons he gave for not posting such articles. I have been thinking ghanaweb posts any and everything unlike myjoyonline and peacefmonline which are very selective.

The first article was written somewhere in 2001....it has been a long time, but the little I can remember is that I received an email from Ghanaweb cajoling and gently talking me out of writing in support of an army officer who had been wrongly accused of something he vehemently denied doing...

The second rejection was barely four months ago and it was an article titled, "Dialing for dollars and euros," castigating relatives who burden those of us domiciled abroad with frivolous demands for money without due consideration for the many hardships some of us have to go through...it was as much a humor-laden article as it was a social commentary on the trying relationship between Ghanaians at home and their kin and kith abroad....after the first rejection, which I thought was mere oversight on the part of Ghanaweb editors, I reposted it again and one more time, it was censored....modernghana.com published it without compunction and a local radio station,Zaa radio fm in Tamale ran it without qualms...

Look, I don't begrudge Ghanaweb's progressive attitude, but there are times when its censorship should be stringent, especially when articles written with tribal and ethnic overtones are submitted for publication....there is no other competitor attuned to the needs of Ghanaians abroad like Ghanaweb, and to safeguard its hardearned reputation, some modicum of editing needs to be created....

But I am shocked by your second example. The topic is very relevant to the site and I think others may have written on it before. What even shocks me further is that, the webmaster these days does not read the articles he posts. Sometimes, he doesn't even read the titles. I wonder what you may have done to have made your article not only to be read by the webmaster but also for a decision to be arrived at not to post it! Moreover, you also write so well (from the comments you post and the knowledge that you are a journalism student doing your PhD???) that no editor will dare set the knife to your articles. Very strange indeed and I really sympathize with your predicament.

Yes, the webmaster can do funny things at times. But I don't think he is purposefully "diabolical". Still your second case is very strange.

I came out of journalism school(Columbia Graduate School of Journalism in New York City)11 years ago where my writing and reporting professor relentlessly drove us to edit, edit and edit again the numerous writing assignments we did for his class. He was and still is my ffavorite instructor...I learned a great deal under his tutelage...

And when I began working as a reporter for a local newspaper in my adopted hometown in the States, my editor, a young man several years my junior really schooled me in the business of writing concisely and clearly.

So, you can imagine my utter surprise when Ghanaweb declined to run my piece....none of the articles I wrote as a reporter was ever rejected, edited massively, yes, but rejection, no way.....at least you were given the chance to savor the fruits of your hard work covering politicians at city hall, local government agencies such as the fire and police departments, the courts and of course the everyday resident of the town or city where you had your beat...reporting assignment..... the best thing about all this was that you got to see your mistakes and oversights in the publication.....and you learnt to be a real good reporter from colleagues who helped you to write the budget story or the lawsuit brought by the local animal-rights group against the city for negligence...I have manila envelopes full of articles that are brown with age, ones that I will forever cherish....not that I don't love my pieces on Ghanaweb, I do with all my heart....but.....

I bear no grudges against Ghanaweb....my hope is that it will continue to provide readers with pertinent news and information about our homeland, Ghana....

It is interesting that Ghanaweb's mischief has now been discovered. When the website started, comments were relatively respectable. Unfortunately, it changed for the worse. Most respectable websites, especially those that have opinion-related content have competent editors who ensure that content that is disrespectful is omitted. Rumor has it that the original Ghanaian owners have sold out to Europeans who have nothing to lose except their money and so do not mind whether content is hurtful to Ghana or not. Ghanaweb is representative of Ghana whether we like it or not. There have been cases where news that affect government is withdrawn almost immediately it is posted. Is it because the NDC government of Ghana is an investor or because the Ghanaian partners are NDC members?
Ghanaweb's latest competition, Modernghana.com is doing better because of its respect for positive editorial content.

GhanaWeb deserves some praises too & not only bashings.
GhanaWeb has made many of Ghanaians in the Diaspora PC-literates & has also boosted the sales of PCs worldwide.

The serious shameful part of it that, even some columnists don't know where this GhanaWeb is based.
I pity them, so they need not to complain too much as I've learned that even some of them are paid by their affiliates to post trash & hatred here on this free forum; whereas in motherland Ghana the scene there is the opposite as usual.
