PAYING TITHES IS SINFUL ?

No topic excites many pastors more than tithes and tithing. Waxing eloquent, pastors with fiery zeal, would teach about how if you pay tithes God would bless you. How your business would flourish, how you would find that rich husband and how all would go well in your life. Blessings would flow like the Jordan River and life would be a bed of hibiscus petals. Conversely, you are also threatened and psychologically terrorized for not paying tithes- there would be no breakthroughs in your life, God would take away from you. Nothing would go well for you. Worst of all, you would be cursed by God because you have stolen from Him. Like the mighty spear of Goliath, Malachi 3:10 is launched at your heart.

"Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me. But you ask, 'How do we rob you?' In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse - the whole nation of you - because you are robbing me." (Malachi 3:8, 9)

This verse has been used to intimidate many Christians into shelling out 10% of their income as tithes. It is probably the only verse in the Bible that many pastors quote when preaching about tithes. Other verses in Leviticus and Deuteronomy that shed more light on the issue are almost never mentioned. Church members are kept in the dark by design.

Was God rebuking the nation of Israel or the nation of levitical priests in Malachi? Malachi 2:1, explains further,"And this commandment is for you, O priests." God was actually rebuking the Levites for abusing the trust of the people. They were not fairly using the tithes for the poor and needy. God is a spirit and does not need food but He wanted the poor to be fed. The Levites were the ones under a curse.

Who received tithes?

Tithe was God’s way of specifically taking care of the orphans, widows, strangers and poor Levites in Israel. This was the only reason God wanted food in his house. God does not need food. Deuteronomy 26:12, clearly states that when all the tithe is collected “then you shall give it to the Levite, to the stranger to the orphan, and to the widow, that they may eat in your towns and be satisfied.” Deuteronomy 14:28-29 New International Version (NIV) "bring all the tithes of that year’s produce and store it in your towns, so that the Levites (who have no allotment or inheritance of their own) and the foreigners, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns may come and eat and be satisfied, and so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands."

Did Jesus, Mathew and Paul receive tithes? Jesus was from the line of Judah so could not receive tithes. Only Levites from the line of Levi could receive tithes. Though the twelve apostles were men of God, they could not receive tithes because of their tribal lineage. How then can pastors today ask for tithes? Are they Levites? If the apostle Paul is not a Levite so could not take tithes why are some pastors taking tithes? The fact that one is a man of God does not qualify one to receive tithes. Even prophets and other men of God in the Bible, not from the tribe of Levi, could not benefit from tithes.

Did Jesus and his apostles pay tithes?

Tithe was never taken in fish or silver or cash. Paul as a tent-maker was not required to pay tithes. Peter as a fisherman did not pay tithes on fish he caught. That was the law of God. None of the twelve apostles could pay tithes because they were not farmers or shepherds/ herders.

Did Abraham, Noah and Jacob pay tithes?

Abraham did not pay tithes. He gave ten percent of the spoils of war to Melchizedek, King of Salem. God did not command Abraham to give. It was from his free will. Abraham did not tithe from his personal property, and there is no record in the Bible that he did.

Jacob also gave a conditional 10% to God which was not a tithe. There is no record of Jacob paying any tithes after this. The traditional 10% in Middle Eastern societies is different from the legalistic mosaic tithe from God. The mosaic tithe was not optional, it was the law.

Without tithes, the message of the Gospel could not be preached

God in His infinite wisdom asked for tithes to be used for the poor and needy. God did not request tithes to be used for pastor's salary, cars, church organ or choir robes. God explicitly said use it to feed the poor Levites and the orphans, widows and strangers. Tithes was NEVER paid in money, always food.

God does not need tithes to spread His word. The apostles gave their lives to spread the gospel of Christ without taking tithes from anyone. Many churches function perfectly today without tithes. We cannot disobey God with the excuse that we are spreading the gospel.

Even if you are poor, unemployed and struggling financially, now is the time to pay your tithes.

Nooooo!!! This is twisting and misquoting the Bible because we want to take money from the poor. The Bible says do not take tithes from the poor and needy. The poor are to benefit from the tithes. They are to be given tithes. Telling the poor to pay tithes, with promises that God would open the windows of heaven and pour blessings on them is a big con game.

The Bible says those with less than ten goats or sheep were exempted from paying tithes. God did not take tithes from the poor. Telling the poor and needy that if they don't pay tithes God has cursed them is the ultimate in greed and callousness. Some pastors tell poor church members to pay tithes before their rent or children’s school fees and expect miracles. Some tell the congregation not to worry about what the tithe is used for. They say to just pay the tithes and leave the rest to God.

Would paying tithes make you rich and prosperous?

The promise of breakthroughs and prosperity and material blessings is used as a bait to make many pour their hard-earned money into the bank accounts of some pastors. This is nothing but manipulation. If the gospel of Christ is about acquiring earthly possessions how come the apostle Paul was not rich? How come John the Baptist, Peter, John and the other apostles did not get financial breakthroughs? Many of Christ's apostles were persecuted and killed. Life was not rosy for them. Were they not blessed men of God? If you believe pastors who tell you that you would prosper financially if you pay tithes, then you need serious Bible study. People like Oprah Winfrey, Ted Turner, LeBron James etc. are very wealthy, but they do not pay tithes, they are not even Christians. If you believe paying tithes would open gates to riches for you, then you are in for great disappointment and cannot carry the cross of Christ.

Should I give to my church?

Yes, absolutely! Give to the church. Your offering helps the church a lot. Paul spoke about supporting the church. But give from your heart to God and expect nothing in return. Give because you love God. It is free-will, not a binding law like tithing. God had a special purpose for the tithes. It was to feed the poor and needy in society. It was to take care of the Levites who were poor, not wealthy pastors who have mansions, fancy cars and are far richer than most in the congregation

Should Christians pay tithes today?

Jesus and his apostles did not pay tithes, neither did they accept tithes. The Pharisees obeyed all the 613 mosaic laws, so they paid tithes. Today, Christians are not under the law, so we do not follow the Mosaic Law, as we are under grace and not the law. How come so much emphasis is laid on only tithes but not the other 613 laws? If we have to pay tithes then we have to follow all the laws, like the Pharisees. When a child disobeys the parent, he has to be stoned to death according to the old law. No Christian obeys that law today. However, some hold on to the law of tithing with the might of Samson. Why? Is it the money? The love of money...

Who is killing the church of Christ?

It is unlawful and unbiblical for anyone outside of the tribe of Levi to receive tithes, be they prophets, bishops, arch-bishops or reverend-doctors. Tithe has become the yoke around many Christians’ neck. When the clergy enslaves the masses and amass wealth at the expense of the poor it creates a history of resentment against the church. Many thinking people become suspicious of religion. When leaders of a faith insult the trust of their flock with misinformation and manipulation, the backlash can be unfavorable to all. The gospel of Christ suffers when boys are molested by clergy just as when money becomes their main focus. Many centuries ago, Martin Luther had to revolt again the leaders of the church who were taking the faithful for fools. You can fool some of the people some of the time but all the people cannot be fooled all the time. At some point Europe woke up.The shady history of the church in Europe has forced many out of Christianity. Today Christianity is dying in Europe. No wonder, a recent pope said, the future of the church is in Africa. Are our pastors robbing God, are they killing the church of Christ?

You see, despite the severe punishment meted out to homosexuals, the act is still going on because I don't believe a heterosexual can just wake up one morning and decide to be a homosexual. Homosexuality is quite common in the animal kingdom, especially among herding animals. Many animals solve conflicts by practicing same gender sex.

From the middle of October until next summer the Norwegian Natural History Museum of the University of Oslo will host the first exhibition that focuses on homosexuality in the animal kingdom.

"Sex among dwarf chimpanzees is in fact the business of the whole family, and the cute little ones often lend a helping hand when they engage in oral sex with each other."

Lions are also homosexual. Male lions often band together with their brothers to lead the pride. To ensure loyalty, they strengthen the bonds by often having sex with each other.

Homosexuality is also quite common among dolphins and killer whales. The pairing of males and females is fleeting, while between males, a pair can stay together for years. Homosexual sex between different species is not unusual either. Meetings between different dolphin species can be quite violent, but the tension is often broken by a "sex orgy".

Homosexuality is a social phenomenon and is most widespread among animals with a complex herd life.

Among the apes it is the females that create the continuity within the group. The social network is maintained not only by sharing food and the child rearing, but also by having sex. Among many of the female apes the sex organs swell up. So they rub their abdomens against each other," explains Petter Bockman and points out that animals have sex because they have the desire to, just like we humans.

Homosexual behaviour has been observed in 1,500 animal species.

"We're talking about everything from mammals to crabs and worms. The actual number is of course much higher. Among some animals homosexual behaviour is rare, some having sex with the same gender only a part of their life, while other animals, such as the dwarf chimpanzee, homosexuality is practiced throughout their lives."

Animals that live a completely homosexual life can also be found. This occurs especially among birds that will pair with one partner for life, which is the case with geese and ducks. Four to five percent of the couples are homosexual. Single females will lay eggs in a homosexual pair's nest. It has been observced that the homosexual couple are often better at raising the young than heterosexual couples."

Sometimes you people have to employ your brains when sieving through issues. Incest is a crime in Ghana and what is a crime, nobody can demand the people of Ghana to allow them to do what they want. Murder is a crime in Ghana so nobody who wants to kill somebody can say it is my right to kill somebody so let me do that.

Having sex with animals is a crime in Ghana so nobody can demand special rights to do that. If something is branded as a crime, nobody can ask the people of Ghana to be allowed to do it because it is against the law.

Ghana is an independent country and the recent foray into our affairs by Prime Minister Blair of Britain and President Obama using their country financial aid to us as a carrot to whip us into line in accepting homosexuality is not fair but are they right to ask us not to discriminate and stop our homophobic bigotry against homosexuals? THAT I DO AGREE WITH THEM. ANY KIND OF DISCRIMINATION WHETHER RACE, SEXUAL ORIENTATION, SEX(male, female) AGE should be shunned by all peace loving Ghanaians. I have been called names because I believe homosexuals are humans like us and if we think they are sick to practise homosexuality, then they need our help and sympathy and not scorn. We don't treat people with sickness with bigotry to cure them so why should we treat homosexuals differently? I don't have to prove my heterosexuality to anybody in this forum but people who know me in this forum know about my family, a teenage son and a twenty year old daughter so I feel comfortable in my own skin to defend any injustice on this issue.

It is this kind of attitude of witchunting that sent six million Jews, Gypsies and homosexuals to Hitlers gas chambers because the world failed to act when Hitler started his blue eyed Aryan superiority experiment in Germany and we should not allow such a holocaust to happen again in the world. Ghanaians and Africans for that matter have this belief that, homosexuality is akin to our culture and moral standard and it is the westerners who are bringing this 'western culture' to dilute our sexual purity but history do not back this assertion up, Africans have been practising homosexuality since creation. You might call me an African sell out, Uncle Tom or whatever but it will not change anything because the truth is there for anybody willing to learn about this issue.

The homosexuality issue has brought to the fore how homophobic Ghanaians, including the Clergy, Politicians and opinion leaders who help shape the policies that guide us are.The myth of exclusive heterosexuality in indigenous black/sub-Saharan Africa was widely diffused by Edward Gibbon's "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (1781)."Referring to homosexual behavior, Gibbon wrote, "I believe and hope that the negroes in their own country were exempt from this moral pestilence." Gibbon's fond hope was based on neither travel to Africa nor on inquiry of any kind."

A century later, Sir Richard Burton, who unlike Gibbon did know something of Africa, reinforced the myth of African sexual exceptionalism by drawing the boundaries of his "sotadic Zone," where homosexuality was supposedly widely practiced and accepted, in such a way as to exclude sub-Saharan Africa.

Is homosexuality akin to Africa and for that matter Ghanaian culture? Did Homosexuality exist in Africa before western influence? Our Political and spiritual leaders would like Ghanaians to believe homosexuality is a foreign culture in Africa which Ghana is part of. Even our own President Atta Mills has said so, but folks, I hate to burst your bubble but there is overwhelming evidence that, homosexuality existed in pre-coloniel africa.In fact the first recorded gay couple in history is of ancient Egypt, namely Khnumhotep and Niankhkhnum. The most common form of homosexuality in traditonal africa prior to european influence, was that of men and boys. As a matter of fact anyone who belives that homosexuality did not exist in Africa prior to European influence is a bigot who can’t accept africa the way it really was but rather believe in an “africa” that fits their baseless ideolistic view of africa. Africans and for that matter Ghanaians like to believe that we have moral superiority than any other group of people on Eartth and as such we want to run away from our own history of practising homosexuality. History has not been kind to us when it comes to homosexuality, let not blame anybody for something that has existed with us for centuries. "Boy Wives": Age-differentiated Homosexuality

In the central African Zande culture, before European conquest, it was regarded "as very sensible for a man to sleep with boys when women are not available or are taboo." What do we mean by taboo? In most cultures in Ghana, it was deemed a taboo to have sex with women when they are in their mentrual period. Not long ago, especially in the villages, a women in her menstrual period was banished from the main compound and has to prepare her food outside. It was a taboo for the wife to cook for the husband when she was in her "period". English anthropologist E. E. Evans-Pritchard was told that in addition to times when women were not available for sex, some Azande men had sex with boys "just because they like them." The adult males paid the families of boy wives, just as they paid for female brides. The two slept together at night, "the husband satisfying his desires between the boy's thighs. When the boy grew up he joined the company and took a boy-wife in his turn. It was the duty of the husband to give his boy-wife a spear and a shield when he became a warrior. He then took a new boy-wife." One commander, Ganga, told Evans-Pritchard that there were some men who, although they had female wives, still married boys. "When a war broke out, they took their boys with them. . . . If another man had relations with his boy, the husband could sue the interloper in court for adultery.

"Among the Fon, the predominant people in Dahomey (now Benin), Melville Herskovits in the 1930s reported that, after the age at which boys and girls may play together, "the sex drive finds satisfaction in close friendship between boys in the same group . . . . A boy may take the other 'as a woman,' this being called gaglgo, homosexuality. Sometimes an affair of this sort persists during the entire life of the pair" (though he earlier referred to homosexual relations as a "phase" through which adolescents pass)."

The South African Thonga provide another particularly well-documented instance of a boy-wife role. A number of southern and western African societies also had female husbands, though whether these husbands had sexual relations with their wives is unclear in what has been written. (It seems that anthropologists studying the phenomenon did not ask that question.)

Gender-crossing homosexuality has been discussed as common in the (Nigerian) Hausa bori cult (and in Afro-Brazilian offshoots of west African spirit-possession religion). Among the Maale of southern Ethiopia, some males crossed over to feminine roles. Called ashtime, these (biological) males dressed as women, performed female tasks, cared for their own houses, and apparently had sexual relations with men, according to Donald Donham. One gave Donham a clear statement of the "third gender" conception: "The Divinity created me wobo, crooked. If I had been a man, I could have taken a wife and begotten children. If I had been a woman, I could have married and borne children. But I am wobo; I can do neither."

Among Swahili-speakers on the Kenya coast, particularly in the port of Mombasa, mashoga are transgendered prostitutes who have all the liberties of men and are also welcome in many contexts in which men are prohibited. The paid partner usually takes the receptive role during intercourse, but it is likely that his inferiority derives from the fact that he is paid to provide what is asked for, rather than from his undertaking a particular sexual role. The one who pays is called the basha (derived from "pasha," a high-ranking official and the local term for the king in packs of playing cards).

Most of the reports of homosexual relations not involving differences in age or gender status involved young, unmarried men's sexual relationships with each other. Kurt Falk wrote about an especially intimate bond of association, soregus, among the southeastern African Naman that included sex both between men and between women (with mutual masturbation the most common form of sex, but also males taking turns at anal penetrations and females using dildoes on each other).

An "exceptionally reliable" Nykakyusa (a people living around what is now the Tanzania/Zimbabwe border) reported to Monica Wilson in the early 1930s that male friends, who live in villages of age-mates when not out herding cattle, generally sleep together. The Nykakyusa accepted that male friends who danced together would have sexual relations. "Even if people see them in flagrante delicto, they say it is adolescence (lukulilo), all children are like that: they say that sleeping together and dancing is also adolescence," according to Wilson's elder. He reported that interfemoral intercourse is "what boys mostly do" and also reported anal and oral sex, ("some, during intercourse, working in the mouth of their friend, and hav[ing] an orgasm").

With reports from hundreds of sub-Saharan African locales of male-male sexual relations and from about fifty of female-female sexual relations, it is clear that same-sex sexual relations existed in traditional African societies, though varying in forms and in the degree of public acceptance. Much of this same-sex activity was situational or premarital, though there were long-term relationships, too. The special Christian animus toward homosexuality was carried to Africa by Europeans and stimulated denials that "the sin not named among Christians" existed among "unspoiled" Africans.

The motive behind this research on African homosexuality and for that matter Ghana having been practising homosexuality without the influence of Western culture is not to ab solve white people for other crimes committed against Africa, especially slavery but my main reason of doing this is to give a face to those who are homosexuals. We talk about homosexuals as if they are not humans like us. We have to realise that, the people we want to arrest and lynch are human beings like us who have feelings and have the same souls our creator gave us hetrosexuals. Their behaviour is not something we have to accept or condone but we don't have to treat them as if they are animals.

Some people are using the HIV/AIDS epidemic as an excuse to eliminate homosexuals but we are not doing ourselves any good because it is the homosexuals who because of societal demands are forced to marry women to camouflage their true sexual preference who are dangerous to the hetrosexual society because these are the people society has turned them to bi-sexuals having sex with women and men to hide their homosexual behaviour. I am not calling for anybody to accept homosexuals and their behaviour but we should not be spewing the KKK kind of hatred in modern Ghana, our behaviour towards homosexuals is simply primitive.

I believe laws are made by humans who are born through heterosexual relationship. Why then do we have to attempt to achieve what is meant to be achieved by opposite sexes coming together by putting same sex together. It will simply not work the way God or nature intends it to work. Even in the kingdom of animals, it is never male to male but rather male to female. If we chose to go it that way then of course animals will be considered wiser or more intelligent than mankind. I think we need to keep to our age long tradition of "from man to woman but not man to man" I will still say death to homosexuality in Ghana if not the whole Africa. May we never see gays flurishing in Ghana.

The question of hatred doesn't even come in here. It is an opposition to a forceful call and admission to a wilful lifestyle seeking to widen its scope. And rightly so homosexuality has been as old as history of mankind.

Reference to Matt 7:1 is good for it does not negate the stand against homosexuality. When you frown upon corruption in society you are calling for its spread to cease however underground it may be. Would you call that a judgement of those involved?

When we expose greedy and corrupt politicians are we judging them? Certainly, we are not judging but condemning the behavior and attitude. And the same God who admonishes we do not judge stands against man having carnal knowledge with man and similarly woman with woman. I hope you patiently read through Rom 1: 18-28. Homosexuality is a fruit of the nature of man gone rebellious against his Creator. That’s why I cannot and will not hate those who engage in it as much as I won’t shun the liar, the lazy, the thief. But my love should make me warn them of their choice and state so that they may opt for a dignified right to live!

Oh Cardinal my good friend, God did not ingrain homosexuality in human's genome and branded that as good as you suggest is the extended meaning of Gen 1: 31. And honestly if you believe what God stands for you would admit that this declaration by God was before the fall of mankind in the grisp of sin, disobedience and rebellion.

Just as we stand against negative traits in society, so we who are convinced of God's opinions on specific issue in life will sound the warning bell! I do not harbour any shade of hatred against those engaged in any form of negative behaviour neither do I call for the heads of those who though not practicing it but condoning and promoting it.

My dear Cardinal, I will always cherish your forthrightness and strong leaning towards human rights but let me suggest to you not to hasten to embrace the call and sympathy for homosexuality in our societies. It has brutal ramifications whose fruits portend abject decay and divine judgment. That is not mine, but God’s. We may disagree but that is the bare facts. We must not hide behind human right garb to defend the indefensible and anything to blossom in our society!

Finally those who want us to take God out of the homosexuality should note that that is mission impossible for life has no meaning if you choose to keep God out of your life. It’s a choice with accountability at life’s end.
