The fact that Twi is so cheap and everyone can easily learn and speak it seems to make some Akans unreasonably uncomfortable. I don't speak Twi and I am not missing anything. My mom and my other siblings all speak Twi and I don't but I care less. I don't need Twi in my career I would have dared to learn it. I don't need a Law, Accounting, Economics, Nursing books written in Twi to pursue any of these professions in Ghana. I just wish the write of this article would think a little deeper. We are not all Akans ignoring Twi. Others are proud of their languages too. BULL SHIT!!!

English is a corrupting and corroding influence. It is subverting our indigenous languages and culture. Using English is a tacit admission that the foreign is better than the local. No wonder we are always hankering after foreign things and not appreciating our heritage.

So instead of exploiting our abundant natural resources we look to foreigners to exploit them and make fantastic profits at our expense.

If you have no qualms speaking English, a foreign language, as official language, why do you kick against the adoption of Twi or any of our indigenous languages as our official language?

Why are some of you so biggoted that you take delight in deceiving people and yourselves so that you can claim ethnic superiority over all others? I've read articles by many Akan columnists on Ghanaweb, including the greatest ethnocentrist, Okoampa-Ahoofe, who claim that the Akans constitute 50% of Ghana's population; some even claim it's 60% or more. But these are totally false!

All one has to do is to refer to the official Ghana Population Census stats and find the correct info. When one does that one will find that the Akans, in fact, constitute only 44% of the population, followed by the Dagombas with 16%, the Ewes with almost 13%, and so on. By exaggerating this statistic, those Akan writers think they can claim some sort of superiority over the other ethnic groups. And that's precisely what you've also done here, Adofo. But you're only deceiving yourself and your own Asante people. You think by doing this you can shore up your own self-image. But you're wrong through and through.

Your call for Twi to be imposed on the entire Ghanaian population is precisely the kind of arrogant mentality that creates serious inter-ethnic problems in a country: that mentality can lead to a civil war. And if you wish to know why some non-Twi-speaking people react the way you complain about when they are asked whether or not they speak or understand Twi, it's precisely because of the arrogance some Twi speakers, especially the Asantes like you, demonstrate when they pose that question. So, if you think one day the Akans are going to impose Twi on the entire Ghanaian population, you better think twice before you enforce that decision.

They then proceeded to colonise our minds through the use of English as our official language, the education system fashioned after the British system, and all the trappings of government including the law and the political structures.

Our problem is that we have not decolonised our minds. This is why we still hanker after everything foreign, and worse, look to foreigners to exploit our abundant natural resources and make massive profits while we continue to wallow in poverty.

Look around you. Every major construction project is undertaken by a foreign company. all our major industries, with the sole exception of cocoa, are controlled by foreign multinationals. and even with cocoa we borrow from foreign banks to pay our cocoa farmers for their produce.

So long as we do not change our mindset and learn to appreciate our own heritage, we will continue to be in thraldom to foreigners. And this includes speaking English, a foreign language.

Whether it is Akwapim Twi, Bono TWI, Akyem Twi, Fante TWI, Aowin Twi, The Ewe Twi, The Guan Twi, The Ivory Coast TWI, The Asante Twi, Twi is Twi. If the Twi language is spoken in any of aforementioned Twi, Every Twi speaking person will understand. That is why we call all of them the Akan people. They speak one language and can understand each other, The only difference is the accent.. Remember, of late, the only Twi Bible was written in Akwapim but all Akans were able to use it.

The only reason why we are advocating Twi is that it is the most widely spoken language in Ghana, and most Ghanaians would speak Twi as a first or second language.

Most of the Akan languages are cognate, in the sense that Fanti and Twi are mutually intelligible - a Fanti speaker and Twi speaker do not need translation to understand each other.

Adopting Twi as our official language would simply mean that you could be literate in any of the Akan languages and be deemed to be using the official language.

Adopting one of our languages as our official language should go hand-in-hand with promoting literacy in all our indigenous languages.

I take serious issue with all of you who find nothing wrong with speaking English, a foreign language, but decry the adoption of Twi, our own Ghanaian language, as our official language. The stark truth is that the majority of Ghanaians do not even speak English, and those of us who speak it do struggle with the language on occasion. The sinister aspect is that English is corrupting our local languages, especially as spoken by educated folk.

I long for the day when we would take pride in our own rich languages, and ditch the language of colonialism.

Around the globe, I can authoritatively say that with exception of Africa where colonial governments imposed on us their languages, most of the advance countries use their own dominant native languages to advance their cause.

Have any one ever heard of Chinese piracy in modern day education? What they do is to buy a particular book on a very important subject and translate it into Chinese language for use in their schools. In this wise, students don't have to think about how to write or speak that particular foreign language in order to grasp the author's thought. Is this not smart move though piracy by Chinese People?

The only way citizens of any country could be recognize around the globe is where the country is with absolute sound economy. In that regard, no matter what language you speak, if the world needs you, they will come for you to learn your ideas through an interpreter. That constitutes language and brain power. Presidents of Russia, Mexico, France, Germany, Italy - just to name these few will not come to Unites States and have a press conference with an American President in english language unless they are very very conversant with the english language. Other than that forget it. They will speak their official native language. E&OE.

It is times such as this that i wish i was east african.I'm proud of my Ashanti roots,my language,my culture and my country.Nontheless,i envy my wife's east african roots where swahili is lingua franca,a neutral language where even the smallest tribes feel that big tribes are not imposing their lingo and their culture on "little people" like it is in west africa.Swahili is a unifying language unlike our tongues in Ghana and it makes nationhood viable.God knows there's no tribe able to form a viable country on its own even the big tribes like Yorubas.For that reason we need to come to terms with the ugly fact that any tribe by itself ain't gonna make a viable nation and we're thus yoked together as a bunch of tribes for better or for worse.

In fact some Ewes are better speakers of the language than some original native Twi people. I believe your article could be better appreciated had it not been the tribal colour given. What exactly is your agenda. Be aware that there are also a lot of inter tribal marriages between Ewes and Twi speaking people pointing to the fact that Ewes do not hate Twi people. Do you know that Twi songs are used in Borborbor right in the Volta Region.Please give us a break ok

Twi helped my Krobo friend and I to help each other when we found ourselves in the midst of the English class in Britain even thou he spoke little Twi and I did not speak any Krobo or Ga at all.We are Ghanaians. Period.

The future of countries in the world is fragmentation and not coming together in a union. It is the simple desire of peoples all over the world for self-determination. It started with the Soviet Union and it is still spreading. Ghana like many African countries will all break up into mini states. Ethiopia started it, followed by Sudan; Ghana next, followed by Cote d'Ivoire, then Nigeria and on and on. We Gas will never accept your Twi. We have our own language; so do the Ewes, Dagbons etc. So my friend, forget about your Twi dominating in Ghana. It will never happen. All you so-called Akans living in the Greater Accra region will soon find yourselves leaving the region on your own volition; no body will force you. There is no Ghana in the foreseeable future. Period.

Again, the way you have condemned the use of ENGLISH by a black is the way somebody can condemn the use of twi by any other tribe. Take away the issue of the skin colour as you rightfully put it, one cannot also be a twi person by speaking twi. It is equally a take it or leave it case. For instance, you appear in a non native twi community and start to speak your twi, it shows how ignorant you are about recognising and respecting people which makes it easy for them to accept you. Find out from the Chinese, what they now do, learning several languages to make themselves more marketable and acceptable. We live in a global village now and no one can impose anything on anybody. Please refuse to be in the shell you are now. Be wise. I speak twi when I think that a twi person has recognise me. But if a twi person denegrates me, I fuck him up squarely.
