Plot To Assassinate Rawlings & Co.

A member of the Ghana Armed Forces, Sgt. Albert Akoto is seething with anger over alleged inhuman treatment meted out to him by some senior personnel in the army because off his perceived loyalty to the current government.
The sergeant in an interview with the Daily Post newspaper accused some senior personnel of the Ghana army of trying to sabotage the current government by harassing junior officers deemed to be supportive of the Mills administration. But what may be of serious consequences to the nation is his revelation that in 2000, he and some of his colleagues were recruited by some of these senior army officers to assassinate the then President Rawlings and some other leading figures in the country if the NDC lost the December 2000 elections.
According to him, those earmarked for assassination included Capt (rtd) Tsaikata, Mr. Kofi Totobi Quakyi, Lt. Gen Arnold Quainoo, Peter Nanfuri, the late Togbe Adzatekpor, Mr. Kwamena Ahwoi and Mr. Ato Ahwoi. He said though some of them secretly planned to scuttle the operations, it did not come on anyway because the NPP won the election and Jerry Rawlings handed over power peacefully to J. A. Kufuor.
According to Sgt. Akoto, to ensure that this heinous plot never leaks out, those who were hired to undertake the operation have been systematically murdered by the architects (of the operation). He said the bodyguard of the ex-CDS, Lt Gen. J. B Danquah was one of the people murdered by the architects of the assassination plot to shut his mouth. Sgt Akoto catalogues a series of illegal activities going on in the Ghana Army, especially against the junior officers and cautioned the Mills government to sit up and listen to the murmurings of these junior officers or blame themselves for whatever may happen later.
He also touched on a group of soldiers who the NPP gave huge sums of money to quit the army after the party lost the 2008 elections, explaining that it is these well-trained soldiers that the NPP is using to visit mayhem in the north to ensure that the Bawku crises and others never end.
He vindicated Rawlings' assertion that the NPP was behind the sudden rise in the spate of armed robberies in the country, stressing that the ex-soldiers were being used to create an atmosphere of insecurity in the army. Sgt. Akoto who was involved in a fatal accident in Liberia during peace keeping operations, told the Daily Post that he was locked up by the commander of his Unit, the 48 Engineers Regiment, for not being able to perform guarded duties though he had been given permission by doctors to rest for a while.
The aggrieved solder narrated how he was attacked in the night by some colleague soldiers and bundled out of his house at Teshie on the orders of Lt. Col. Ofori. Sgt Akoto is currently homeless. He said he has tried without success to see President Mills to intervene on his behalf after trying without success to get some high-ups in the military and in the government to intervene in the matter.

I actually E-mailed this article to you on 2nd June, and had expected to see it in the popular Graphic but no!
Sir, this is why it is being sent again.
That June 4 should be celebrated goes without saying! The question is what actually does June 4 mean?
From the trial of JJ Rawlings this leader of the May 15 attempted Mutiny in the Armed Forces was so bold that so many of the under-privileged in Ghana wished if this day could ever come!!
And indeed it came because many more joined hands since JJ's ideals
as we heard at the trial were just 'appetizing'.
When Okatakyie wrote to Kutu far earlier for a change in power
"otherwise one day we shall be lined up and shot one by one",it was more than a prophecy. Nobody enjoyed because human beings from some families were lined up and shot. My sympathies to all. But could it have been avoided? JJ carried the coffin of Odartey because Odartey
died in action. How many of us did not join hands in breaking the hitherto untouchable 'republic' of Makola? In my own small village, my mother was among those lined with some known deeds. She was told
"you talk too much so from now talk less" No such act was sanctioned by the AFRC. Revo went into every community. The fact that productivity was so low made the untouchables who had access to goods to hoard them and sell at any price!!!
In the Kutu era some gingles normally sounded before the "Ghana Muntie" when it was newstime. One still sounds right in my ears in Europe here. It said:

So June 4 came. Elizabeth Ohene did implore the AFRC to stop the Firing squad on the grounds of using one's position to amass wealth.

Today the situation is different. There are still top Military Officers who are stinkingly rich. Or rather fantabulously rich. But should the Ghanaian always LET THE BLOOD FLOW of those who have amassed so much wealth? Neither should we say JJ robbed Peter so as to pay Paul. Those JJ kept under hypnotic spell by 15 May 1979 were not the chaps who went to every village whipping wrongdoers, and the like. Just too many of us did too much wrong. Such events can hardly be wiped out from the Human Calendar.
Please don't let us forget that Hitler was born in the Kingdom of Prüssia in 1899 but on his 100th Birthday, two teenagers in far USA shocked the world by doing what Adolf Hitler himself even could never have done.
To me June 4 should be celebrated every year. It is June 4 that matters, not December 31st. Let us take consolation in the saying "if you are involved in a lorry accident, it is still a lorry that conveys you to the clinic".
Fellow Ghanaians, the positive sides of June 4 outweigh the negative. Those top Military men of today who are rich are not free in their hearts. It is not easy.

Even postage stamps were nowhere to be found in the post offices but rather with market women selling pepper and tomato. Essential commodities like sugar, milk, soap became luxuries and only the rich dared to go near such items! The then military top brass were a principality unto themselves with reckless abandon. There was nothing like accountability. That abnormal situation was what eventually brought out June 4, 1979.
The khaki boys went into action full throttle settling old scores with people in a very reckless and demeaning manner! One incident I will never forget happened at Keta when a son (a military Lt.) of Keta shamelessly and remorselessly humiliated another son of Keta (a trader) by tying round his waist a guy rope tied to a truck and ordered the elderly man to pull the truck!! That was the height of disrespect to human dignity. So many sad incidents happened during that era all over the country. Precious lives were also lost in that period of madness when the mob led by the university boys cried for more blood to flow!!!! All is now history.
The societal ills June 4 sought to eliminate are still very much with us so it is needless celebrating June 4. The events of June 4 when orderliness was thrown to the dogs are a shameful watershed in Ghana's history.
To therefore continue celebrating June 4 and 31st December is offensive to the sensibilities of majority of Ghanaians. Enough of June 4 and 31st December. Ghanaians deserve a break.
