For an Asante NDC member to say that in a radio station meant he has seen it, heard it and observed it before saying it all out in the radio station.
What happened in the Kufuor's Government attest to the fact that yes Asantes are more ethnocentric than any other tribe in Ghana. JJ Rawlings could have recruited only Ewes in his Government and even married an Ewe but looking at the other side of the coin, Kufuor had 99% of his Government all Akans i.e. Asantes. These days AKAN means Asantes, a sign of their ethnocentrism.

Let's tone down tribalism in political discourse, because it is not helpful. It's obvious Akans are majority and will naturally be reserved a major stake in political appointments. Whether one likes it or not, if this does not happen, but minority tribes happen to have a larger stake, it will be seen as "suppression" of the majority if we go by tribe, because obviously Akans dominate in every aspect of the Ghanaian society: Population, landmass, economic, political social etc...
Many Ghanaians even speak or understand Twi more than, say, Dagomba or Ewe or any Ghanaian language. That in itself tells a lot about the major standing of Akans in the Ghanaian society vis a vis other tribes. Fighting or attempting to suppress this force is not only unwise, but dangerous to say the least. Do we have any way around this that will make better polical, economic and social sense for mother Ghana?
This is not to say that Akan must lord over minority tribes, but to state the reality of the so called "majority carries the vote" conundrum as known in democracies.
People in the Eweland have a historical pattern of voting which translates into tribal because 99.9% of their votes go for NDC, a party founded by one of their own, Rawlings, if Akan followed the same pattern, somebody like Hilla Limann from Upper West wouldn't have been elected a president.

Third Party Bystander, if you want to come across as an objective person, you should be careful of regurgitating NDC propaganda. I'm also politically neutral in the sense that I don't care which party wins so long as it provides good governance. But with time, I've grown very resentful of the blatant negative propaganda the NDC is wont to engage in. It will be a shame if well-meaning people start believing such stupidity without asking for evidence.

@THIRD PARTY: "Yebroism" was strengthened during JJ's time. That was when these deep divisions started. By the way, can anyone name one school in the Volta Region that has a head who is a non Ewe. Outside of the region many Ewes are accepted and excel but try doing the same if not an EWE in the Volta Region and they will reject you. Sorry, non ewes, you will never get an enclave in Eweland.
Tribalism is alive and well in all tribes in our country -- When you meet a Ghanaian outside the country the next question they ask after they find out you are Ghanaian is where you are from, and they don't mean where you lived or grew up but rather which tribe you are from.
Many Akans rejected Acheampong's government despite that he was an Akan on the other hand JJ was hailed by the Ewes even though many did not like his agenda and policies.
Unfortunately, it is what it is and the politicians take advantage of these division by playing the tribal card. Why do you think Arkaah, Mills, Mahama and Amissah Arthur or for that matter Bawumia were selected for the bottom of the presidential tickets? It is to get their tribes/regions support and votes -- although the strategy does not work for the NPP.
If the Akans were as tribalistic and voted en-mass as the non Akans then I think NDC would never win elections. The support for Union government technically failed, although Acheampong claimed they won, because the Akans voted massively against it.
Chiefs reign supreme because of bribes they get from the politicians due to tribalism in the country. My point is the tribal card is used by all parties so we sound like hypocrites when we start pointing fingers at others.

First of all let me say that Yawose's article is full of distortions but I know it is out of ignorance.
Let me correct him that we don't call Ashantis or Akans "Gblutor" as he wants others to believe but the word is 'Blu' 'Blutor' and in describing somebody you will say 'Blutorwoe' which just refers to Akans or Ashantis.
Calling NPP Blutorwo party is just what the party is generally refers to which many in the party have been saying all these years that they need to remove the Akan party tag on the party,it is not Ewes who are saying it,it is what you made your party to be.
If you are addressing your rallies you do it mostly in Twi even in Accra forgeting that there are others in the party who are not Twi speakers because you don't have respect for other tribes.
Your presidential candidate publicly referred to they the NPP people as Akan people saying all die be die.
Kennedy Agyepong on radio said they should kill all Ewes and Gas in Ashanti region but your NPP party didn't see anything wrong with that, they even treated him like a heroe,as if he has won a presidential election.
Before you write do your research work very well if you have no idea of what is going on in the country.
If you can't even tell who are the officials of your own party the what do you think you are, don't write about people if you don't know anything about them.
For your information,Peter John Amewu is the current Volta Regional Chairman of NPP,he is not just an ordinary member but the chairman of the whole region which you should have known, nobody is making that up,the man was elected barely a year ago,January 2014.
About President Mahama speaking to Ghanaians in Twi,I personally wrote about it just last night,it was wrong and an insult to the rest of Ghanaians in that audience and outside,no Ghanaian president should do that,it is a disrespect to other tribes in the country and I hope he doesn't do that again when he travels outside the country.

So English is the "national accepted language"? What is the percentage of Ghanaians speaking that as opposed to Ewe or Twi or even Ga?
To you, it is unacceptable that the President chose one of our own languages in which to address Ghanaians in Gambia? Rather, it would have been acceptable for him to choose a foreign language? Which is better, a foreign language or one of our own languages? Did you feel disrespected when you were addressed in English n the past although you did not understand the language when you were born? Didn't you learn to understand?
Confess here that the real issue is your own subconscious tribalism which enables you to hate listening to Twi. Under the circumstances, what would you do if we were to choose Twi as the national language? Resist? If all it takes for you to feel disrespected is a government official addressing Ghanaians in Twi or in any other local dialect, your problem is intrinsic ethnocentricism, and you should be ashamed of yourself.
I have never thought that language ought to cause me any grief if I can understand it even a little. Any local language spoken anywhere ought not to form any basis for your respect or disrespect.

Dr SAS,I stand by what I wrote and still don't like it that the president of my country will choose to speak to Ghanaians outside the country in Twi making it looks like other tribes don't matter.
We learn the English but it is the language that unite us but not the Twi language which we are being forced to speak, the president should also not join that imposition of Twi on Ghanaians.
Some of us don't kiss ass and will say things as the are no matter what, the president was wrong,a wrong is a wrong, period.
If you see me in America just because I look like a Ghanaian without asking me if I speak Twi or not and start speaking Twi to me that is an insult, the fact that somebody comes from Ghana does not mean that person is Akan or
speak Twi,Twi is not a national language.
I will not feel disrespected if they speak English to me if I don't understand English because English is the national language, that is the language to be spoken in official gatherings of Ghanaians from all walks of life,we don't have to be perfect in it before accepting it as our official language.
This is nothing against Akans or the Twi speakers and it has nothing to do with tribalism,I understand Twi at least some and try to peak it when it becomes necessary but that does not mean I should be happy to see the president speak Twi to Ghanaians in a national gathering of that nature,I don't mind if the president speaks Twi in a rally in Kumasi or Koforidua but if the gathering is for Ghanaians drawn from all walks of life he should address them in English.

If all that causes you grief is for somebody to approach you and speak Twi to you, the things that disturb your life are too many. Rid yourself of them and feel your freedom.
As I said before, your issue has to do more with hatred of the Akan language; which could also imply prejudice against its speakers.
I have never in my life been upset because somebody spoke any language anywhere. but I am aware of many who do, and these are per se tribalists.
Learn how to feel at home with every language; that is how to feel at home with everybody. My numerous Ewe friends liked the fact that I love their language and try to learn it. Somehow, they construe it to imply my open-mindedness....and they are right.

Choosing a candidate from the north to be a vice presidential candidate is tribalism created by the NPP which has now become headache for the country,NDC didn't start that, they selected people based on merit but not based on geographical location.
President Rawlings didn't select his vice from the north but he won more votes in the north than any Ghanaian president that we know.
NPP is the most guilty one dividing the country to score cheap political points.
They have even make it a tradition to select only a Moslem to be the vice presidential candidate,no Christian can partner their presidential candidate just to get Muslim votes but they always get less votes than the NDC because the people are more discerning to know that the interest of the larger group is better than the interest of just one individual.
Even Victor Owusu did it with his Popular Front Party but he lost the election but NPP decided to continue with that,Bawumia was not selected based on merit,he was not even a member of the party but they selected him to win the religious and tribal votes.
We need to stop using just one individual for votes and people have to realize that person is only one individual whose selection will benefit only his family and friends but not the entire community let alone the entire region.

I hate to get into this harshly censorious tribalism debate but for you Corney to even try to convince anyone that Ewes are not tribalistic but Asantes are is laughable and the height of hypocricy.
Though I'm not Ewe, I supported Rawlings with all my heart and soul when he appeared on the political scene in 1979. I was out of the country at the time of the coup and when I returned a few years later I had a few experiences that changed my outlook on the Rawlings revolution. First, I realized most Ewes had started to address each other in Ghana as "Nye Bro" which I found weird. A few months later, I had another eye popping experience whilst commuting between Madina and Accra. It was in 1983, the year of the raging bushfires and the year when one had to spend several hours at the"tro tro" station in a queue to board the commuter bus to wherever the destination might lead.
On this day I was headingto Accra central. When the minibus finally arrived, there were about 6-8 passengers already on board. The driver and some passengers were chatting heartily among themselves in Ewe when I took my seat among them. They were buddy-buddy with each other and I got the impression they were probably members of one family. After nearly 15 minutes of commuting together, a teenager of probably 13-14 years who boarded the mini bus the same time as I, alighted by the Shangri-La Hotel. The driver picked an extra passenger to occupy the vacated seat and demanded payment, the equivalent of a full fare from Madina to Accra central. The teen pleaded for a reduced fare since he commutted just about a third of the full distance. The driver stood his ground but the teen hadn't any more money. Finally a kindly lady on the"tro tro" bailed out the teen by paying the disputed amount. Soon we were on our way again. The driver suddenly blurted out in english in apparent disenchantment with all the passengers who pleaded on the teenager's behalf : "When "your" people charge you don't complain but when "our" people charge you complain". I was taken aback by those comments that were couched distinctively in tribal verbiage. As far as I was concerned there was nothing like"your people Ghana" and "our people Ghana". I knew just one Ghana which I knew was enough for all of us. I asked the driver : "Sir, who are your people and who are our people? Can you please explain"? Suddenly silence permeated the entire vehicle except the driver's voice and mine. He wouldn't answer my query but every one on the mini-bus decoded what the driver who was of the Ewe tribe meant by "our people" and "your people" innuendo. The driver was livid so I proposed that he drives the bus with his passengers to "The Castle", the seat of government where Chairman Rawlings also lived, knowing he was the best mediator I could think of.That to the fuming driver was nonsense platitude and declined my request. When we got to the 37 Military Hospital one of the driver's Ewe speaking buddies alighted but he did not leave without this ominous warning : "You watch your back from today. I've marked your face. " Apparently he was an army officer. I have gone through this lengthy episode with you to let you know that when it comes to tribalism, bigotry, ethnocentrism or whatever you choose to call it or how you slice and dice it , most Ghanaians, and on a grander scale, most Africans, are not innocent. Ewe, Asante, Ga, Fante, Akyem, Mamprussi, Dagbon, Nzema, Gonja, etc. all feel insecure and combat their feelings of insecurity with tribalism.
The first step in solving a problem is to admit there's a problem. Corney, you can't bury your head in the sand and say there's no Ewe tribalism or only Asantes practise tribalism. We can only progress as a nation if we can acknowledge that we are different and that there's beauty and strength in diversity. We can co-exist and develop together in peace and harmony .

Righteous outrage, we must say!
We would caution though, that as we all know "tribes" are composed of individuals who are presumed to have agency. The "tribe" in this case does not represent the individual, not even "their region".
Therefore, we ought not swiftly assume that foolish words spoken by another individual against a "tribe", one who happens to be active politically, or one who is a member of a political party, that those views represents the view of any "tribe".

You hit the point accurately - Jonny. Many of us who had the prevelaged to work with different ethnic groups can authoritatively said, this tribal bigotry do exits among all the tribes. However some individuals practiced it to the extent that, many a times it leads to economic and social injustices to their victims. Others use it as a means of riducle which does not in a way affect the victims economically or socially.
Yes the minortiy are trying to cow down the Akan majority with anything they do and say. In the wake of Rawlings blood hounded regime in the early '80's who were the first victims to die mysteriously having not committed any treason against the state - they were all Akans - 3 Judges and a Retired Military Officer. Rawlings sowed the seed which has growned and bearing fruits and it is time we are enjoy it.
I think going forward, Akans have every right to defend their interests and not to be cowed by any faction of the society. We are not going to let other people use our leniency as our wickness. Akans are law abiding, compassionate, reasonable and loving people. Our corridors are open to any one or group of people who will think with us and play it safe on the same level turf with us. We have to safe guard our identity, worth, culture for our unborn grandchildren. E&OE.

STONER, I THINK THE ATTRIBUTES YOU HAVE DESCRIBED ABOVE CAN BE FOUND IN ALL TRIBES, THUS, AKANS ARE NOT THE EXCEPTION BUT THE NORM.
FUTHER, YOUR CONCEPT OF "MAJORITY" IS CLEARLY SKEWED, SINCE A CLEAR " MAJORITY" SHOULD BE ATLEAST 50% AND AKANS DO NOT PRESENTLY RISE TO THAT BECAUSE OF INTERMARRIAGE AND GROWTH OF OTHER TRIBES.
IT SHOULD BE NOTED ALSO THAT MANY AN AKAN COMMENTATORS ON THIS SITE HAVE ARGUED WHAT IT MEANS TO BE "AKAN", WHICH SENDS A RED FLAG TO A THIRD PARTY OBSERVER THAT THERE MAY NOT BE UNITY OF ALL "AKANS" AS YOU PERCEIVE IT TO BE STONER!

Hei TPB, I like your input but remember that geographically, Akans in general occupy majority of the entire land of Ghana. It is true as you point it out about intermarriages which has swept in the entire country. Would it not be prudent for our leaders to show sense of torelance and inclusiveness in the way they do things? If it had been so why Rawlings in the wake of his revolution, barbarically ochestrated the murder of 3-Akan Judges and an Akan Retired Military Officer without any justification? Brother, don't close your eyes to what had happened in our beloved country which some people wan't to burry it without recognition. Many attrocities occurred in that blood hound regime which grown-ups at that time could not believe their eyes.
Many people lost their businesses, assets, life under the PNDC regime which the current NDC party is its center pillar. A proverb goes like 'show me your friend and I will tell your character'. The hatred seed sowed by Rawlings is still in existence in NDC party and you cannot turn or teach a robot to be a human being.
Lastly, let me comment on your last paragraph - Akans in particular do not entertain or harbour stupidity of their family members, hence we are able to condemn wrong doing no matter what. That does not mean there is disunity among us. We are not like some tribes who no matter what - will side with their people in time of their wrong-doings. Enjoy the nite fella and for courtesy sake, please desist from using uppercase which tells you are annoyed or angry. E&OE.

The habit of associating any group of people with any generic habit is always problematic because you can always find too many exceptions to make any such generalization sustainable as a scientific conclusion. In this instance, the very title of your piece is deeply flawed.
Instead of excusing tribalism as being natural and prevalent, you must see it in all its evil ramifications and spurn it outright. To me, the only problem with those condemning Osafo Marfo's statement is that they have not exerted similar energy to condemn similar statements emanating from their camp. Therefore their objective is influenced more by political considerations, and not bynational unity.
We must condemn tribalism wherever it comes from, rather than use it as a mere political subterfuge to enhance our parochial political agenda.
If we do this, we would be directing our efforts toward national unity, not toward conscious political division for the purpose of winning elections.
