  How are many local people are into the galamsey in Ghana- less than 10%.
  The rest are Chinese. So now how can you sack Chinese citizens when you having been begging them for money, grants and look at the numbers of scholarshipa offered to Ghanaian students in China. Do we think the Chinese are father Christmas or fools who have no use for their money and resources.
  Its time Ghanaian and Africa realized that there is never a free launch anywhere under this sun.

  But, surely, to say that mechanically, galamsey cannot fit into a budget because budgets are "about income and expenditure for the year about" shows you are not been sufficiently critical and objective.
  
  How much does Ghana lose from the activity every year?
  
  (1) What is the dollar amount of gold prospered by individuals, how much in tax was collected, and how much would the government want to collect in a year?
  
  (2) What is the annual cost of environmental degradation from galamsey and how much must government allocate to stop, mitigate, restore?
  
  (3) How much does government spend every year in police and safety resources on those lands?
  
  You should get our drift, we hope.
  Now, write back and tell us about your own. After all, galamsey is at bottom an economic activity.

  A Minister of Finance can create public awareness by announcing measures of a particularly important nature.It's only the complacent people in our midst who do not regard the possible death of our Rivers as "a crisis" that must occupy the undivided attention of the whole nation. "Crisis budgets" are indeed a well-known occurrence all over the world. A sharp Minister of Fnance ought to be able nto ignore the orthodoxies of his portfolio and think globally about the NATION'S MAJOR PROBLES instead of concentrating on expenditure and income, just because that's what has often been done.

  Is galamsey the only illegal economic activity in the country that should be captured in the budget? Isn't smuggling another major illegal activity that drains the country's coffers, should that find it's way into the budget too? We could even push the boundary by adding those indulged in "sakawa", wouldn't that be a nightmare for measuring the economic indicators of a country? I fully understand the menace they are and their impact on society but the budget isn't the right place to address social ills. The police and local authorities should be given the free hand to deal with these criminal activities. But let's not be in haste to stop them overnight either as doing so will add to the already high unemployment burden the government is confronted with, not forgetting their social ramifications i.e. rise in armed robbery, prostitution, crime, family disintegration, drugs, poverty, homelessness etc. The one-district one-dam and one-village one-dam initiatives are good programs that will go a long way not only in lowering unemployment but making galamsey an unattractive venture. As they say, the devil finds work for idle hands.

  It is instructive of how ignorant we are regarding our nation's affairs that some fellow can use computer time to glibly suggest that galamsey is in the same category as other crimes, such as snuggling.
  
  Galamsey entails the wholesale destruction of rivers that give our people water to drink. Therefore it threatens LIFE. It makes water-pumping systems that later to large communities inoperative.
  
  Apart from destroying the sources of drinking water, the galamesy people also ruin cocoa and food farms.
  The threat they pose to our country is therefore, without any exaggeration, an "EXISTENTIAL" one.
  
  Our past do-nothing deadgoat rulers declared that the galamsey operators were doing it "to make a living". It is up to our far more intelligent Government of today to denounce and reverse that attitude. And that can best be done by the Government taking every opportunity to make it known that galamsey will not be allowed to kill our nation any longer. Which means that bureaucratic correctness will be jettisoned and not allowed into the game in any form whatsoever. Who invented budget parameters, anyway, and why must they be cast in stone? Isn't such facile political correctness akin to Nero fiddling whikstvRome burnt??

A sensible govt should ban it outright. The massive damage would not be reversible if immediate action is not taken. I cannot express my total disgust to the wholesale destruction of our water bodies. BAN THAT DREADFUL THING NOW!

  #Can a people be so unconerned -- if not stupid -- enough to acquiesce in their own self-induced genocide? Where do the Governments we elect expect the water for the next generations to coe from? No-one ever provides an answer.
  The President calls on the chiefs to stop galemsey! But if he reads his predecessor's security reports, he will find that there us evidence that some chuefs facilutate galamsey operations. Should I weep for my unborn grand-children or what?
