  i agree with you and hope our justice system considers it as well. why cant prisoners who commit minor offences do other social work like keeping our compounds clean even the courts. what is the point in sentencing a driver who parked wrongly to prison rather that giving him an alternative punishment?

  I was privileged to be on a TV programme a fortnight ago in which we discussed the newly constituted prisons council. My opinion is the lack of transformational initiative of some occupants of public offices. The council should go beyond appealing to or recommending prisoners for presidential clemency and concentrate of how we can rehabilitate these unfortunate brothers and sisters of ours to reintegrate into our society. Farming as suggested is good occupation that can easily be learnt in prisons and which also can be their primary source of livelihood. From land preparation to sowing and harvesting will keep them occupied. Looking at the meals that these poor souls are served with, we could judiciously invest in them to be able to provide them with decent meals. This should lead them to establish rabbit; snail, grasscutter and fish farming within the prisons. Mushrooms cultivation should all be brought on board to ease the pain these prisoners go through when they fall sick due to poor diet. The skills acquired here will definitely prepare majority of them to see the ray of hope for good life after serving their sentence.
  Government should also consider non custodial sentencing so that we can reap the benefit of certain expertise of convicts who are professionals on the field of medicine, law, engineering etc. I think Ghana would have been the winner if the court had sentenced Lawyer Tsatsu Tsikata to serve a non custodial sentence by lecturing @ the law school or Adam Ibrahim to lecture at the agricultural faculty at UDS. We should not underestimate the shame that is going to befall such people when they are found doing community service like sweeping the streets of their locality with everybody knowing why he is rendering those services.
  We should be innovative enough for other countries to also come and learn from us instead of always drawing lessons from other jurisdictions.

  After serving two years in state jail, I gave her a lift to her home. That was when she stole the cord.
  
  Go figure! What did her incarceration teach her?
