The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, is currently representing Ghana at the 2025 Gavi Replenishment Summit in Brussels, themed “Gavi 6.0.”

He joins other African health ministers in making a compelling case for increased investment in healthcare across the continent.

The high-level summit, co-hosted by the European Union, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Vaccine Alliance (Gavi), seeks to mobilize global support for Gavi’s ambitious 2026–2030 strategy.

The initiative aims to immunize 500 million additional children, avert more than 8 million deaths, and prevent up to 150 disease outbreaks, generating an estimated $100 billion in economic benefits.

Addressing delegates, Akandoh underscored Ghana’s commitment to the goals of the summit and reiterated President John Dramani Mahama’s health agenda.

He highlighted plans to deliver free primary healthcare, expand financial support under the MahamaCares programme, and position Ghana as a pharmaceutical hub in West Africa.

The summit has drawn participation from global political leaders, international organizations, civil society, vaccine manufacturers, and private sector stakeholders.

Together, they aim to reaffirm global solidarity in immunization efforts, especially amid weakening commitments from some traditional donor countries.

The outcomes of this summit are expected to play a critical role in advancing global health equity and strengthening pandemic preparedness.
