My wife was transfered from VRA hospital 4 years ago to the regional hospital Koforidua. They never demanded a farthing. I don't know if its a case by case situation or some corrupt drivers doing that to tarnish their image ...

When your relative is rushed to the hospital in Ghana do the hospitals treat them for free? Even with health insurance we still pay for health care in this country. So why are we expecting the ambulance service to operate free of charge? If we want the ambulance to operate free of charge then the government must make provision for their fuel and other administrative costs. But I can bet anyone that if the governor decides that the ambulance service should provide services for free, it won't take a month before their operations comes to a halt!

What I know is, when the ambulance pick you from a road side, resident, work place, accident etc it's free of charge. But if they are referring you from a hospital to another you pay something. Please let's try and make enquiries on their charges and compare to the private ambulance you could see that the government ambulance charge less than the private ambulance. But if I may ask, if you go to the hospital with NHIS card, do you still pay something or you don't?

I think the personnel should always collect money from patient relatives, payment should be made before transporting the patient to avoid all this doubts and accusations pointed at some few EMTS.

That's ridiculous again! What kind of country is this? The ambulances belong to the state of Ghana and were therefore bought with taxpayers' money. Of course, the services should be paid for, because it's not just about petrol costs, but also about personnel and repair service costs. Hey countrymen, our country is going wrong! However, the question arises as to why sick people in an emergency situation should first spend money before being taken to hospital by ambulance? Does this mean that an average citizen has to lose his life because the state does not care and does not show solidarity? First aid is the basic medical need of every Ghanaian. It is a basic right.The ambulance service is part of first aid. The ambulance service saves people's lives first, regardless of their ethnic origin or religion, before charging for its services.
The Ghanaian government should remedy this by charging a flat fee for the use of ambulances, regardless of how far the patients are transported. A flat fee, whether from A to B or A to Z. This is how corruption can be fought against.
