  Historical records do not name a specific individual passenger or soldier who introduced the Spanish influenza to the Gold Coast (modern-day Ghana). Instead, the virus was introduced by crewmen and laborers aboard the American merchant vessel S.S. Shonga .The vessel, outbound from Freetown, Sierra Leone, arrived at the port of Cape Coast on August 31, 1918 . The crewmen were already ill with the virus, and sixteen severe cases were hospitalized when the ship docked in Accra by September 3 .
