First things first. The safety of Ghanaians hold supreme to any other interest and blame. What the FDA sought to do was to interrupt the supply of these drugs and create awareness to the general populace. Now we have to find out how these drugs were cleared from the harbor. Was there a connivance with all the parties involved at the detriment of the health of our people. This is a cancer and FDA must be commended for having to take the first step. we urge them on to enforce laws that we so take for granted.

I am happy there are people like Dr Sarpong looking and watching and challenging the system,
I have not heard from the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana, PSGH which is a body of all pharmacists in Ghana, i have not seen their comments yet, but i cannot agree with Dr Sarpong more, how did these products get unto our markets at our points of entry, how were they cleared and how were they tendered for into our hospitals and clinic.
This shows a system failure and until we strengthen our regulatory systems more of this will follow, i bet this might be just 0.001% of these fake products on our market i am sure they are more of such not to talk about how many lives we have lost from fake meds and until we as professional stand up to our roles the system will be taken over by fake meds and substandard meds because they are cheap and easy to smuggle through.
Let us see what comes out of this case and Dr Sarpong looking at your expertise i think you should be involved more in issues in Ghana

Mr. Aseidu, whilst you are right and support your article, I don't agree why it should be the gov't that you instigate the investigation. This is public scandal No 1 and I don't even know the function of police institution. If I am right, the main function of such institution is to protect the public. In democratic country, there is a line between the gov't and judiciary, therefore the gov't should don't interfere with police institution. Obviously, the law is broken either from FDA or Tobinco and it is only corrupt police institution in Ghana that will drag their feet before arrest is made.

This release is a non story. And Kwame Sarpong Asiedu does not know what he is talking about. Living in the UK does not preclude a knowledge of events on the ground in Ghana. And if it is the same Kwame Sarpong Asiedu who was an 'analyst' here about ten years ago, he should know better. But if living in Essex or Kent makes him unaware, there is corruption in every facet of Ghanaian society. That means that with the best will in the world, the FDA could not stop some importers breaking the law. What Asiedu should be advocating is stiffer penalties for rogue importers who try to beat the system. It is extraordinary to me that he would reason that "the frequency of FDA reports on fake drugs points to a potential regulatory failure" rather than pointing to the FDA doing a good job and being transparent with their operations as they should be for the purpose of public information. What kind of logic is that? It is equally extraordinary that someone in the pharmacy business would try to shift the blame from a company wanting to make illegal money.
The release is peppered with the credendials of Asiedu: RPSGB member; PSGH member; IPM [UK] member; IOD [UK] member. To what effect? To impress the President to take his petition so-called seriously? To make his readers sit up? A Ghanaian in the UK of all places should have learnt something from the English with regard to modesty. Is Kwame Sarpong Asiedu looking for a job - CEO of the FDA or some other? On 14 January 2002 the Daily Graphic carried a story in which a Kwame Sarpong Asiedu from the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the KNUST in Kumasi analysed and found some psychiatric drugs to be unwholesome. Those drugs had come from China and Nabros Pharma Pvt Ltd of India. So what is new about fake drugs from India?
We are getting IMANI fatigue with Cudjoe and his sidekick talking out of their arses much too often nowadays.

From the sublime to the ridiculous. Mr Jengbe, you use profanity so openly as if you suffer from Tourette's syndrome. There's no shred of substance in your piece compared to Kwame's petition which respectfully beseech the president to look into possible malpractices with far reaching implications. Perhaps you don't see this matter as life threatening as opposed to the rest of us. I refuse to address you in regards to your comments about Kwame Sarpong Asiedu's professional qualification because clearly you are not au fait with professional writing. Just so you know Kwame does not need a job. Comments are free but sheer stupidity doesn't sell these days.

In advanced economies the will be parliamentary hearing on this serious matter. If culpability is established on the part of the importer n exporter they must be brought to justice. Foreigners are not afraid of Ghana's justice system because it s corrupted or susceptible to comprise by Ghanaian accomplices. This just another example of the regulatory incompetence n wanton dereliction of duty on the part of the authorities. It is very sad indeed.

Dr Sarpong has indeed shown professionalism. As FDA is protecting the lives of Ghanaians, also has to protect and support the pharm'cal sector not to collapse the indigeneous Ghanaian company.
