'20 judges should be appointed to the Supreme Court' - Justice Bright Mensah

Supreme Court judge nominee, Justice Philip Bright Mensah, is advocating for the appointment of at least 20 justices to the Supreme Court to ensure timely justice delivery and improve efficiency.

He made the recommendation during his appearance before the Appointments Committee on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, for his vetting.

Justice Mensah explained that the current volume of cases before the apex court necessitates an increase in the number of justices to effectively manage the workload.

He argued that such a move would not only help reduce the backlog of cases but also strengthen public confidence in the judiciary.

“So, if you ask me the minimum number I would recommend for appointment to the Supreme Court, given the nature of the work they do, I would suggest 20 judges,” he said. “Given the number of cases in the Supreme Court, in my humble opinion, I believe 20 judges would be appropriate.”

He added, “It is clear that there are more cases now, and as the caseload increases, it is only fair and reasonable that more judges are appointed to handle them.”
