2024 Election: Be vigilant in your reportage – Akufo-Addo urges journalists

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged journalists to be circumspect and vigilant in their reporting, especially as Ghana heads to the polls in December.

In a speech delivered at the 28th Ghana Journalists Association Awards in Accra on September 28, 2024, President Akufo-Addo emphasised the need for journalists to combat the spread of misinformation, which he believes could undermine electoral processes.

The president further called on all journalists in the country to prioritise factual reporting and truth over sensationalism as they play a critical role in shaping democracy and governance.

“Every four years, Ghanaians go to the polls to choose their leaders, and in that process, the media plays an indispensable role. It’s through your work that citizens are informed about the policies of political parties, the integrity of candidates, and the issues that matter most to their lives.

“The responsibility of the media during elections cannot be overstated. You have been at the forefront, monitoring polls, reporting on potential irregularities, and ensuring that the voices of the electorates are heard. Peaceful transitions of power that we have been seeing in Ghana are no small part due to the diligence and integrity of the media," President Akufo-Addo said.

In his concluding remarks, the president cautioned against the rise of social media coupled with disinformation that can falsely mislead the public and cause unwarranted mayhem.
