The flagbearer of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has said the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) is bracing for defeat in the upcoming December elections.

According to Mahama, the NPP has internally accepted this inevitable outcome and is now resorting to gerrymandering to salvage its position.

In a press statement released on Monday, June 3, 2024, Mahama criticised the Electoral Commission (EC) for its recent directive barring political parties from monitoring the ongoing transfer of votes.

He emphasised that this decision violates a prior agreement made with political parties during an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting the previous week.

“The NPP knows and internally admits that it will lose the 2024 presidential elections. We also know that, as a last resort, it seeks to deploy gerrymandering during this voter transfer period to improve its chances in the parliamentary elections in the erroneous belief that it may rely on that to affect its presidential votes,” the NDC flagbearer said.

The NDC flagbearer accused the EC of aiding the NPP in its alleged attempts to manipulate the electoral process.

He insisted that the Commission's actions suggest an intent to help the NPP secure victory in the 2024 general elections.

Despite these tactics, John Mahama expressed confidence that the NPP would not succeed in retaining power.

“Again, they will fail because that strategy will not work. We have in our possession a long list of constituencies in the Ashanti and Eastern Regions and selected places in Greater Accra and other regions where the NPP is seeking to transfer thousands of voters from their strongholds to offset the NDC’s gains in constituencies we control,” Mahama added.

Pointing to the NPP's leadership over the past eight years, Mahama suggested that their performance would ultimately lead to their defeat in the upcoming polls.

He warned the EC to adhere to fair electoral practices and uphold the integrity of the election process.
