Former deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Koku Anyidoho, has raised concerns about former President John Dramani Mahama’s promise to provide free education fees for all level 100 entrants students in tertiary institutions.

Anyidoho took to social media to question the practicality of this pledge, which was featured in the recent NDC Youth Manifesto launch.

In a series of posts on X, Anyidoho urged stakeholders in the education sector, including the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU), and the Committee of Vice-Chancellors (VCs), to question the feasibility of Mahama’s proposal.

He expressed skepticism about how such an initiative would be structured and funded, given the existing challenges faced by the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme.

“You condemn Free SHS for not being properly structured and you promise this? Respectfully, how is it going to be structured? You mean ‘ALL’ Level 100 at ALL Tertiary Schools? ALL Tertiary Schools? How is it to be funded? Hmmm!!! Ghana my Motherland,” Anyidoho wrote.

In another post, he questioned, “Sir, HOW are you going to ensure dedicated funding for Free SHS and also ensure dedicated funding for ALL Level 100 in ALL Tertiary Schools???”

He warned against the potential imposition of policies that could lead to further challenges in the education sector.

“Honestly, as a nationalist/concerned Ghanaian, considering some of the heavy bottlenecks Free SHS faces, it is crucial that, UTAG, TEWU & Committee of VCs comment on the feasibility of this idea. Let’s not allow politicians to impose policies that create problems before we talk,” he added.
