A former deputy minister of state, Abu Kansangbata, has challenged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to also nominate a female candidate for the role of running mate.

Commenting on the outcome of the official outdooring ceremony of Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as the 2024 running mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), on Tunsung Radio at Wa, the former minister said that perhaps the NPP should get a woman candidate who is able to match up to theirs.

During the live radio session, Abu Kansangbata, who has close associations with Prof Naana Jane, threw the challenge to the NPP, urging it to also give Ghanaians a female running mate.

"I challenge the NPP to nominate a formidable woman possessing qualities such as integrity, honesty, sincerity, humility, and modesty, akin to Prof Naana," he said.

Abu Kansangbata stressed the significance of this challenge, claiming that the NDC is the largest political party in sub-Saharan Africa.

He also said that by encouraging and allowing women to take up leadership positions, the NDC is leading by example and fulfilling the principles of the UN charter.

Kansangbata added that it is time for the NPP to step up and nominate a woman with credibility and one who is able to match up to the political discourse.

The former deputy minister further raised questions on "whether the NPP genuinely values women in leadership and if they possess the capability to appoint a woman as a running mate."

On Wednesday, April 24, 2024, Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang was unveiled as the NDC's running mate.

The event captured the nation's attention, as has her nomination as the first female running mate of the NDC - although for the second time, is historic and has sparked a lot of conversations about gender parity across the country.
