The Constituency Organizer for the Manhyia South Constituency, Alhaji Abubakar Alhasan, a.k.a. Aboba, has disclosed that the unveiling of the vice presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, will be heralded by an unprecedented return of members of the Movement for Change back to the party.
The organizer further disclosed that the unveiling of the Manhyia South Member of Parliament, an event expected to be a big blow to the Butterfly movement, will be held on Tuesday, July 10, 2024, at the Jubilee Park in the Ashanti Region.
Speaking to Kojo Marfo, host of Abusua Nkomo on Abusua 96.5 FM, he served notice that the Movement for Change, a breakaway from the NPP, will implode immediately after the National Council of the NPP endorses the candidate.
“In the next 32 hours, when the National Council endorses the candidate, the Movement for Change will implode. The only persons who will remain with Allan Kyerematen will be his confidants, like Joseph Amoah and the KNUST political science lecturer, Dr. Akwasi Amakye Boateng.”
“The members of the Movement have already spoken extensively with us behind closed doors and told us they are excited that one of their own has been chosen to partner with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. They are willing to return to the party,” Aboba stated.
He further disclosed that prior to the mammoth event at the Jubilee Park, the Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, will be presented to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for his blessing.
NAPO, as he is affectionately called, will also be paraded through the principal streets of Kumasi before he arrives at Jubilee Park.
Abubakar Alhasan debunked assertions that President Akufo-Addo had reservations about the choice of NAPO, insisting, “Per my information, the president commended Dr. Bawumia for presenting the very name he was waiting for.”
“The name of the flagbearer’s choice was packaged and sealed in a special luxurious envelope deliberately imported from Dubai and presented to the president,” he boasted.
Sources from the National Council suggest that the processes to declare the NPP’s Manhyia South parliamentary candidacy vacant so that interested persons can contest will be finalized immediately after the council’s meeting on Thursday.
The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has officially submitted the name of the Minister for Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, as his preferred running mate for the December 2024 presidential election.
Dr. Bawumia presented him to the leadership of the NPP after holding a crucial meeting with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House to inform him about his choice of running mate.
Ahead of the meeting, several names had been tipped as potential running mates, but Dr. Opoku Prempeh, the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, emerged as the preferred candidate.
The stakes are high for both the NPP and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), as the NPP seeks to win a third term and the NDC aims to avoid a third consecutive defeat.
When unveiled, Dr. Opoku Prempeh will face off with Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate of the opposition flagbearer, John Mahama.
Both running mates have previously served as education ministers, and their records in the sector will be a focus of the campaign.
